Ok so I first have to admit, I am an advent Final Fantasy fan as well as a fan of a lot of other Japanese role playing games such as the Star Ocean series and Magna Carta. Go ahead laugh now, yet I feel myself at times at a loss as I hear the same spew that seems to come from the Escapist Magazine as they literally grind Jrpgs into dust. First off, I simply want to say I like the Escapist don't get me wrong but seriously I don't think I ever heard a positive review about one even though many of them I feel have better plot and storyline elements then games like Gears of War and Halo (call me crazy I don't care). I don't think Yahtzee has ever done a positive review period except for Portal so I can't say much about him, but I just saw the review for the new Star Ocean game by John Funk and the man literally throws it out because of the voice acting...ok I know for those like myself who like Jrpgs many of you like a good anime too, and I don't know a single anime that has good english voices I swear it can't be done and seeing how these kinda are related I'm willing to overlook that if it's a good game.

Anyways enough of my mindless rant, I just wanted to open the forum on Jrpgs..do you guys love em hate em, worship em, burn em...thoughts please.

They are okay I guess. My biggest issue is that they're all so samey. However, that can be a good thing at the same time because sometimes I'll just be in a "JRPG Mood" if you know what I mean.

I desperately dislike JRPGs. I won't ever say they're bad, because clearly they're doing *something* right, but I cannot stand them. Anything Square Enix touches becomes instant fail in my eyes, and although I have tried many times to play and enjoy them, it hasn't worked.

I hate how the JRPG bashing is so popular these days, you don't have to apologize for liking them.

That's not very hard, is it?

I'm a big fan of JRPGs by Atlus, but I'm pretty "meh" about everything else in the genre. Persona, though, is an instant "Yes, please."

JRPG plot:
You, a young and mute sword-wielding adventurer have, through a set of crazy coincidences, been partnered up with a mysterious girl who [has amnesia/is a princess and ran away] who holds a mysterious pendant the evil [insert evil name] kingdom seems to be very interested in!

You soon find yourself under constant attacks, but you, along with your [wise cracking and sarcastic/frustratingly useless/annoyingly idiotic] partner decide to help the mysterious girl out.

In the end the pendant turns out to be the key to stopping the evil and cleanses the land!

i like the fact most of the time you can customise equipment etc.
however it is very linear - just follow the metaphorical yellow brick road, and the love interests could at least be kind of a suprise

I don't mind them, as I try to have every genre represented in my gaming collection. My personal favourite JRPG's are Final Fantasy 9, and the Golden Sun series.

I could careless.
I'm more of a Western RPG fan anyways.
Plus I've rationlized that without D&D (A western RPG) there would be no FF1, and henceforth no FF series. And the JRPG market would be incredibly...unknown.
No joke, look up the original FF game (NES version, no any of the remakes) and you'll see what I mean.
Namely the spells per day. Which I found more interesting of a system than mana.

Vancian magic is certainly interesting, yes, but man was it ever a pain. And silly, when you think about it. (The only place it really made sense was in the Dying Earth series--D&D would've been better served with a Sorcerer-type mechanic from the start. Which is where 4th Ed went, anyway, after so many years.) I'd rather use Ars Magica/Mage:tA make-a-spell over level-slots-per-day anyday.

By Thor's hammer! This man has it down!

It's sad. That's the exact plot of Chrono Trigger. And I love that game.

My God I'm such a tool!

There's nothing wrong with liking something that relies on a lot of Tropes, [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HomePage] so long as said tropes are executed well.

Chrono Trigger certainly qualifies.

EDIT: Oh, wait. I've suddenly realized that this is sarcasm. My god, I'm such a tool!

I personally love them. But I love anime too and I will basically buy anything that emulates that experience into a game. But that's just me. I would love to see Bioware do a true Western RPG but with anime/cellshaded graphics and set in a Final Fantasy like world. But it looks like Jade Empire is as close as their going to get.

I really like jrpgs but AC10 makes a good point jrpgs are incredibly samey. Big hair, big weapons, big fights, big... boobs. Jrpgs all seem to follow the same path such as looking for some magical artifact to save the world. Also the protagonist is almost always a miserable bastard.

This is why I like Persona 4 a lot. It's not samey.
