I like them a lot. I haven't had a whole lot of exposure to Final Fantasy, though (just 6 and Tactics).

In my opinion it's hard for any of the main numbered FF's to live up to FFT.

Here's my take on JRPGs; The story telling criteria is in need of serious overhaul. Take any of the flops that have pegged as a big budget game (Star Ocean games come to mind), and apply some decent story telling methodology, and you really can increase enjoyment.

Ever since JPRGs started to incorperate voice acting, story telling has taken a real blow. This is not to say there are no stories; in fact if you look at the big picture, there's alot of focus on interpersonal relationship and epic scenarios. The delivery often falls flat, or grandiose. All or nothing does not work well with pacing.

Oh, and I'm sick of protagonists that have only barely hit puberty.

It's kinda strange, though. FFT is one of the very few games I quit out of boredom (and I think the only one past the Genesis/Megadrive). I'm not sure what it was about the gameplay, but I just couldn't go on soon after the second chapter started. Since I didn't have that problem with Fire Emblem, and Disgaea looks hella fun, it's probably not TRPGs in general, but...

I used to love them. Then something happened inside of me. I snapped or something (or it was the ridiculous Blue Dragon) but I found I lost my love of them. Lost Odyssey should have been an epic experience but I felt very meh playing through it. The game did everything right. Good story, interactive combat and enough puzzles to choke a horse.
