Here's my take on JRPGs; The story telling criteria is in need of serious overhaul. Take any of the flops that have pegged as a big budget game (Star Ocean games come to mind), and apply some decent story telling methodology, and you really can increase enjoyment.
Ever since JPRGs started to incorperate voice acting, story telling has taken a real blow. This is not to say there are no stories; in fact if you look at the big picture, there's alot of focus on interpersonal relationship and epic scenarios. The delivery often falls flat, or grandiose. All or nothing does not work well with pacing.
Oh, and I'm sick of protagonists that have only barely hit puberty.
