the only straight up rpgs i like are from bioware. (i realize mass effect is a tps/rpg hybrid... im talkin bout KotOR and Dragon age.... even though mass effect is pimp.) the rest are hybrids... rts/rpg, fps/rpg, etc... i dont like jrpgs at all. what kills it for me is all the freaky teens who save the world with swords the size of aircraft carriers and hair that looks like it was made by a crazy man. im sure they arent all that way but every single one my freinds have shown me are all that way. i think ff13 looks good though. havent tried it yet though.

I never, ever liked jRPG... as a PnP player i feel like they have nothing of RPG, and find them quite borings... and well some of the wRPG are my favored game of all times: Baldur's Gate serie, Fallout 1 & 2 (HAted the 3... but keep high hope for New Vegas), Mass Effect, KotOR, Dragon Age, Vampire the Mascarade Bloodlines...

As the titles states which do you like more? or like me do you like both equally?

WRPGs: I love oblivion, fallout 3, Borderlands, and Bioshock(which has vague rpg elements XP)

JRPGs: final fantasy tactics, FFTA, FFTA2, Fire emblem, Tales of Symphonia (the only tales game i've played and one JRPG i think yahtzee needs to try because of the lack of angsty children and turnbased combat)
Oh great, this topic again...

Your examples are horrible, by the way. Oblivion and Fallout 3 are FPS/RPG hybrids, and Bioshock is a straight-up shooter.

FFT, FFTA, FFTA2 and Fire Emblem are SRPGs, not JRPGs.

Oblivion is not an FPS :)

Though the examples are pretty crud... KOTOR/Mass Effect/Dragon Age/Baldurs Gate/Fable would have been better, IMHO.

Wow, your name fits so perfectly here. Stop bugging people because of not choosing the 'right' RPG as an example to suit you, and whatever else you seem to be so eager of pointing out. Nobody wants to hear it. In other words,
I know, right? I love my screenname, because it's like a pre-loaded insult to use against me. Helps me spot the dull knives in the drawer, if you catch my drift. Though you didn't have to double it up by using an image macro, I kinda got the point the first time. :)

The problem wasn't so much that they're not the 'right' RPGs, but that most of the examples aren't part of the genre he's putting them in. I wasn't aware that pointing out a mistake is considered trolling these days. The argument then strayed from my original post thanks to people claiming things like "Fallout 3 is as close to the RPG archetype as you can possibly get."

I like both. I think that generally WRPGs are better, but there are some JRPGs which I love above all else.

Ah this thread again, it will certainly turn out well.
The sarcasm is strong in this one... And yes, we've seen too many of these.

As for the topic, I like both. It worries me a bit that you (OP) posted 4 strategy games as examples as jrpgs, though. I mean, sure, Fire Emblem has rpg elements, but really, it's just not an rpg...

As for the guy who said Deus Ex used a purely aiming-based shooting system and Fallout 3 uses your attributes to determine the preciseness of your shot: Are you sure you're not confusing the two? Fallout 3 uses your attributes, sure, but only such a little bit that Deus Ex really feels more like an rpg to me. You have to freaking stand still to be able to aim!

Another one?

Man, this is getting tired. How about "I HATE [your favourite] and have no reasonable grounds to do so, and I will not adjust my views, despite whatever evidence you may present". Yeah, bet that has you all riled up.

The problem is that JRPGS have become so ordinary these days. Que the spikey-headed kid with his problems... Sigh.

I prefer JRPGs, most of the time. They have actually goals for me to accomplish and usually a well set story to follow along with.

Which is also why I don't really like the Bethesda RPGs...I want to have a goal to do something, or have something to tie me down...instead of just..."Look, I'm randomly created man with hardly any defined characteristics!....Ohh, I wonder what I'm going to find at the end of this hard grueling dungeon...A random rusty dagger that I've found on all the raiders outside.......Thanks randomly-generated loot..."

Which is probably why Kotor is still my favourite WRPG.

Wtf are you on? Bioshock you'd be right about, but just because Oblivion and Fallout use a FPS camera doesn't mean they are "fps hybrids", that's what Borderlands is. Fallout 3 and Oblivion are as close to the RPG archetype as you can possibly get. I mean, to even qualify as a "hybrid" there would need to be equal amounts, and the only shooting that goes on in Oblivion is bows and CASTING MAGIC. Fallout 3 you /could/ rationalize as a hybrid, if you were stupid. And only if you played without touching VATS once.

As to discussion, RPGs more of late. ME2 & FO3 are the kings of taking up my time. I love older 'JRPGs' like Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, and only a select handful of the newer ones like Digital Devil Saga and FF12. I really hate what JRPGs have become, except from Atlus. I'm looking right at you Square-Enix, you miserable pile of shit.
Uh...

No. "Hybrid" doesn't mean "evenly split between the two original concepts", it just means a blend. So, yes, in the sense that you're playing these games from a first-person perspective, and using the buttons to swing/slash/shoot/sling/slap the enemies, rather than the traditional RPG fare of choosing an attack, and having the person do it, they are (at best) hybrids.

The fact that you don't shoot people in Oblivion would make it difficult to characterize as an FPS/RPG, but it's certainly closer in feel and actuality to Fallout than to Chrono Trigger. Also, how the hell do you consider Fallout anything other than an FPS/RPG? It's certainly not governed by RPG rules, and most of the combat is done by shooting from the first-person perspective. The specific amount of hybridization isn't what matters (and how in the world would you think that either Fallout or Bioshock contained even close to "half" RPG is beyond me).

But, that's not even the point. The fact of the matter is that Western developers don't make RPGs. They make games where an avatar of the player dicks around while following a strictly linear path, and make decisions which alter not at all the main plot arc. In exchange, they lack any depth of character, character development, or even the most basic element of character: consistency of personality. You're not playing a role, you're playing a shell with a gun.
