Title says it all. Do you think JLU Hawkgirl should have been forgiven her role in the Thanagarian invasion and let back on the team?

While, I do like redemption stories, looking back, I'm not sure this was handled well. Something like this doesn't really feel like something Shayera could have come back from, especially given how much of a big deal alien invasions are in the DCU. Hell, there were still people mad at Superman for his role in the Darkseid invasion and that was under mind control.

So for me, I feel she should not have been let back on the team.

Yes, she should. While she did betray the League and Earth, she did so in order to end a war and prevent further bloodshed. She firmly believed that after the war was over her people would leave Earth alone. She thought the occupation of earth was a necessary evil and that once everything was done, she'd leave and earth would be free and safe.

She new the occupation was wrong, but she did it because she believed the ends, the defeat of the Gordanians and the end of Earth's occupation, justified the means, the occupation of earth in the first place. Once she learned that billions of innocent lives would be sacrificed she makes the even harder decision of betraying her people. When she learns that Earth will be destroyed in the process of the Thanagarians doing... whatever they were gonna do, she betrays her own race to protect the Earth. She can't go home and she's probably severely screwed over her people. Considering everything she sacrificed to protect the Earth, yeah, the team was right to take her back.

And of course the three characters I liked most are the ones that forgave her.

Well, the thing is, GL was still looking at Hawkgirl and thinking to himself "DAYUM I'MMA HIT THAT", so that may have influenced the decision somewhat. Superman had nobody in the governments of Earth desperate to bang him, so tough luck for him.

They should probably let her back into the club in case she kills Superman then.

Kind of an out-of-the-blue question to ask about a decade old series, but then again given the animated offerings DC is producing right now...

I'd say no as well. At first she thought the same, leaving regardless of the verdict either out of a realisation that staying would seriously damage the League's reputation (she later discovers that there are entire online web rings of her 'hatedom') or a need to get some time away to think, or both.

She only came back by request. At that point, she'd made her new allegiances very clear (seeing as all of Thanagar wants her dead now) and posed no further threat to the League or Earth. The only reason to continue to keep her out is PR, so I could certainly understand if they would allow her back in at that point.

I think Superman said it best when the revealed the vote to her years later: "I believe in second chances."

As you said, Superman has been in that same spot. Yes, it was under mind control, but to the average everyday citizen, that's not going to matter. I'm sure there are still people out there who hate him for what he did, but he keeps trying. And he probably knows that he'll never make up for it to those people, but he tries anyway.

And I think that's the same thing for Hawkgirl. After some serious soul searching, she still wants to try to make things right, even though she knows she never will.
Now, screw up a second time on a scale like that? Yeah, gone for good.

Indubitably. We all know that Status Quo Is God. It was never a question of "if" but "when and how?".

Besides, the Justice League is all about keeping order. Permanently exiling Hawkgirl from the JL would only result in an inability to maximize their capacity to safeguard the Earth from endless hordes of villains, extraterrestrial and interdimensional bad guys whom are all certifiably "Evil" with a capital "E".

He abstained actually.
She did what she thought was going to help her homeworld with no real downside for humanity. The moment new information surfaced that she was on the wrong side she switched.

That pretty much sums it up actually. She was torn between two loyalties, her loyalty to the Justice League and Earth and her loyalty to her own people. She genuinely believed that her people had Earth's best interests in mind, but when she found out that they were going to destroy Earth and all it's people she turned her back on them which could not have been an easy decision to make.

She did a bad thing for a good reason.

But, in the end, she did the right thing...even though it fucked up her people and made her the ultimate outcast.

Fuck, SUPERMAN was a pawn for Darksied and (probably) lead to many deaths because of it.

I thought she already was back in the team or rather the whole group in Unlimited?

I know what he did, I watched the series multiple times. My thoughts were that even his abstaining on the vote will have influenced the voting of the others, because psychology of friendship and shared history and such.

If I recall correctly, and I might not, she elected to act on her own and entirely disregarded the League. She could've consulted the other members, all of whom have a record of doing the right thing and would've probably helped if asked. Instead she decided to just go ahead and allow her people to invade. Now there is something about it being easier to ask forgiveness than permission, but I think that applies to taking the last cookie, and not to allowing an alien race to invade another planet.

She showed that she distrusted the League and was willing to go ahead on her own, so why should she be on the team at all?

But I might be misremembering.

A bit worse actually. She'd known the invasion would happen all along and was sending her people info and weaknesses to take out the League

Minor correction: Not probably, definitely. The episode Hunter's Moon confirmed that the betrayal led to the Thangarians losing the war.
