Do I know any of the millions of people who will die if I don't shoot him?

I would ask if there was any particular place that I was supposed to shoot him, and how many rounds I was supposed to put in him.

Anyone that would not end one life to save millions has something very much wrong with them.

Well to me it depends what he looks like. In this situation, first impressions are all important. I mean sure, if he LOOKS shifty, i'll kill him.
And if he's in some sort of uniform. Uniforms signify that he has some sort of power. Perhaps the power of nuclear warfare.

If he's a tramp, then I'd have trouble believing him to be of much threat.
That's what he WANTS you to think!
It is true that this tramp may end up stabbing a man in uniform, who had the power of nuclear weapons, and that this man's colleagues got riled up and declared nuclear war on their greatest nemesis...

Ah fuck it, I'll just shoot him.

Yes, no question about it. Though if it was a woman I would have second thoughts. And if it was a child I probably wouldn't do it no matter what's at stake.
Wow, I'm going to walk up to you on the street one day, hand you a pistol, tell you to kill some guy or 10 million people will die and then you will go to prison for being gullible. It will be HILARIOUS.

All these "two option" moral quandaries are all, as philosophy students will tell you, FALSE DICHOTOMIES. There are ALWAYS more than two options, and there are ALWAYS alternatives. Study your fallacies, people.

Really depends on who the person is, if the person is a great scientist who is close to curing cancer or inventing renewable fuels etc then sacrifying Millions is better in the long run for human kind, if they have no apparant potential then its better to save the millions as there is a greater chance that 1 of those will be useful for solving our problems etc.

This calls to mind a concept in a book I read, Daniel Suarez's Daemon, wherein a holographic projection of the book's villain (or, arguably, its hero...fun book, this) says that "if the Daemon triumphs, tens of millions will die. If it fails, billions will die..."

To be honest, not my place to judge. I somehow suspect I'll be labeled a coward for this, but the concept of murder is so incredibly foreign to me (by virtue of moral upbringing, obviously, but also by religion...I'm Buddhist) that I don't think I could make that decision. And that's without even considering the hundreds of potential mitigating factors involved. I'll leave shit like this to Batman.

They wont die. I wont kill him. I'll save everyone. No one will have to die.

Considering I am quite cold-blooded about things, I would likely hesitate only slightly before ending him.

Well I'd need a dossier of information explaining why he's responsible for millions of deaths.
If it was someone like hitler, stalin, bin laden. Absolutely. And I wouldn't bat an eye to it. Theres more people that need killin' than horses need stealin'...

Edit:
If it was commanded by the President of the United States, yeah, I'd do it. Regardless of if I voted for them or not, they are CINC.
Well does the person telling you to kill him give you a reason why he has to die. IF he is a terrorist or a child predator, not a problem. But I doubt if the powers that be would just hand you a gun and say kill this guy without give you vital intel on the target.

People find this morally wrong, but also accept the consequences to stop the man. Some people just could not do it because they feel that it would be impossible to live with it, even after saving so many people. This is what seperates Men and Great Men. Men try to live day by day, afraid of consequences, and they wish nothing of it. A Great Man accepts the consequences, and sacrifices even his own well being to protect. One saying can sum this all up easily, a saying that has been in history for longer than most remember. "The Need of the Many outweigh the need of the Few"

I do not count myself as a Great Man, not even a Man, but if it comes down to it, yes, I would shoot the man and accept the consequences, as the poll shows, most people would do so as well. I'm not sure whether this is a good or bad thing, but it is right.

i could if there was a reasonable amount of proof. that said if it was someone i actually cared about (which is quite a rare thing) i could easily commit to killing millions just to save that one person (lets face it theres no shortage of people).
and you could assume, if you wanted and to 'justify' your choice, that some of those millions are people from xbox live. Which then you might become a hero for others.

There is only one answer to a question such as this, what would Jack Bauer do? If you havent seen season 3 of 24 don't read the spoiler.

In season 3 of 24 Jack was forced to kill his superior Ryan Chapelle in cold blood, because a man threatening to release a deadly virus into the population ordered him too. If he hadn't, then millions would have been killed. There is only one option.

"God forgive me"
- Jack bauer, Season 3.

I would make a scene about not knowing how to use the gun then accidently shoot the guy that gave me the gun. If I had any bullets left I might shoot the guy, but first I would ask him how he can kill millions of people just by being alive (that's a fun superpower there).

I would kill the guy who gave me the gun. I mean who ever has enough guns to just give them out to anybody who walks by has to be pretty fucking dangerous. Besides he may have more guns on him :p

Assuming the pure hypothetical scenario, that indeed you can be positive that killing the man kills a million, then yes, I could do it, no question. To attach special meaning to a death because you had to suffer the emotional consequences is selfishness, pure and simple. If I did not kill the man, I would be guilty of a million murders, not just one. The ease of deferring responsibility, because you didn't do it personally is cold comfort because of the millions who died. I would then mourn him, in the same way I would mourn the death of any single other person.

If I had to kill a friend or family member, I'm not so sure. I'm not sure I could do it. However, I recognize that there is nothing noble about this: If I couldn't do it, it would be a moral failing on my part, plain and simple.

...I really wanna bring up the episode of House with Chase and the Dictator. To avoid any spoilers, let me just say that personally, I wanted to high five Chase, and it made me do a complete 180 to decide that Cameron was a *****.
