Aren't they all kinda spread out across multiple platforms?
That's why I'd say get the remixes, because that brings the ones on the handhelds to the consoles, and it's one specific console in this case, so as long as you have a PS3, you should be good to get all of them(except maybe Dream Drop considering how recent that one was, but I'd recommend the 3DS just because it's an awesome system). Well, 358 won't include the gameplay on the remix, but honestly, you're missing nothing. It doesn't change at all from 1. The only reason why it was so well accepted was because it had some amazing characterization and a great story, which is why the cutscenes are the only part showing back up.

That's the point of the remixes, so you can have all (or nearly) games on one console.
Ok, but if I just want some Core story, I should just go for 1 and 2, or 1.5HD and 2.5HD later?
I'd still recommend the HD remixes, as like I said earlier, you get improved controls (at least in KH1, which seriously needed it) and the Final Mix additions, which are actually important but were never released outside Japan (and they left a lot of people scratching their head).

Oh lord, glad to hear they fixed the controls for the KH1 redo.
It needed it something bad.

I'd say go for the HD remixes. You only have a few months for 1.5, and 2.5 shouldn't be long after. It costs a bit more, but you definitely get a lot more for it since you will get most of the series in those two buys. And just as a heads up, Birth By Sleep is very crucial to the story, don't let the fact that it was a handheld game fool you, it's the prequel to it all and explains basically why everything happens as it does. That should be in 2.5, so that is reason enough to wait for that.

Does that mean I have to buy PS4 too?

Curse you, Square Enix, for making me buy all these consoles I only need for Kingdom Hearts.

Curse you.

I'm interested, but apparently the PS4 is going to cost $900 in Australia. Yes, you read me right.

Nine. Hundred. Goddamn. Dollars.

Given that, I'm definitely going to wait for a price drop, or else import one from the UK - which leaves me plenty of time to see if this is any good first. I'm hopeful, but there's always a chance...

Not at all. Never understood the hype around the series, other than the obvious blatant exploitation of nostalgia and fanservice the games have. However, it is another feather in Sony' cap in the fight against M$' BS system, so I guess I should be happy about that.

5 Years ago I would've been excited. Not criticising them for sitting on their I.P - much better they take their time and go into it bursting with ideas - but personally I've just found myself liking certain mores of Japanese pop-culture/storytelling less and less recently. My main gripe is the tendency to confuse complexity with depth.

That said, the combat system in 2 was really fun, so who knows. If the stars align and I somehow have the requisite pot-o-gold for a ps4 in the first place, maybe I'll give it a chance.

edit: is Tetsuya Nomura in charge of this one, btw?

i can't wait for this game, my initial reaction was that it was just another trailer for KH 1.5 HD Final Mix PS3. but when the trailer picked up steam and showed the high res scene i knew that it was KH3.

Quick question to anyone who would like to answer. I know playing all the games would be optimal. But I haven't played a KH game since the 2nd. I did chain of memories back on the GBA and HATED the combat system. And since then I've just never picked it up for any of the portable consoles. How much am I going to miss out by not having played them? Do you think it'll make a noticeable impact or can someone who just played the main series keep to it?

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH I NEED THIS.
Ahem. Sorry. This is the one thing that got me excited about the next console gen. Nothing else. Just this.

You are going to miss out on a lot, especially if you haven't played Birth by Sleep on the PSP, which is basically KH0, and it explains why everything in KH1 and KH2 happen.

358/2 Days is semi optional, although the story does have an impact on some characters (which is why it's been converted to a movie for the HD remix), while Re:Coded is entirely optional (unless they introduce something in KH3 that makes it relevant). Chain of Memories is the link between KH1 and KH2, and is important. Lastly, Dream Drop Distance is the link between KH2 and KH3, and just as important.

You can of course get the game just for the gameplay, just don't expect to get everything about the story (hell, apparently, some people who have played all the games don't get the story). I'd still recommend getting the HD remixes if you can.

I am hyped it is finally on the way but what I am most looking forward to is all the confusion of the "die hard fans" who refused to play all those "handheld spin-offs".

Although it is only a basic draft of what the gameplay is like it looks really promising so far.

The short answer is with the exception of Re: Coded all of the games are needed to get what is going on.

The long answer is, Birth by sleep is a prequel that sets up the origins of the main villain and his goals, Chain of Memories introduces the concept of nobodies and explains why Sora is asleep for a year, 358/2 days is pretty much Roxas's back-story you kinda could skip this one but missing it causes confusion when it comes to how a certain characters actions change between games, Re:Coded pretty much is just an excuse plot to establish info to send to Sora (the bottle at the end of KH 2) bottom line is it says "People need saving bad guy is coming back!", Dream Drop Distance sets up the events that are going to happen in 3 which pretty much reveals the main villains new goal. So yeah a lot is kinda missed if you have not played them.

Ugh, I was afraid of that. I don't have a PSP nor a Vita. the DS titles might be more obtainable, except the 3DS one. Not to mention slogging through 3-5 games worth of content could easily add up past 100 hours. I might just be better off watching Youtube for the story.

I flipped my shit when I saw this trailer.

At first I thought it was a 2.5HD announcement, which would have been cool anyway. But then the Destiny Islands part kicked in... and I... I lost control.

I was shaking with excitement for the following half hour. Some people cried, I had a personal earthquake. Also I almost cried.

That could work, or you could try and go there [http://kh-info-block.tumblr.com/]. That should satisfy your curiosity.

I just looked at kotaku and they are saying it's going to be $550, fair hike in the price compared to Europe, but $50 cheaper then the Xbone.

Oh, yeah...I guess they must have changed it after the retailers realised they were going overboard with the 'overcharging Australians' bit and realised Sony hadn't marked them up that high.

It's still way too high for one game, but...Kingdom Hearts 3 remains my "but now you have my attention" announcement.

Actually, as I said in the E3 thread, the European price is still higher (?399 come to about $561 Australian).
