i haven't played games quite like what you seem to be describing.

i would quite happily accept a knife fight unless i had, for example, a difficult to get weapon, or the enemy's flag or something. in which case i would either shoot you or run away. (i will not "teabag" under any circumstances. that is a stupid and immature waste of time.)

it sounds like fun though. if i get a game where i can knife fight, i probably will.

I whip out my melee weapon sooo much!

I especially love doing it in BF2. people never seem to knife fight, but I'm quick enough that it doesn't matter :)

I sometimes accept the challenge to engage in honourable melee. I won't if I'm carrying special/very expensive weapon though.

I have a huge respect for the laws of knife. However I have a long memory and hold those that break the codes of honor accountable at all times.
So yes I love a good knife fight but we live in a world where you cant expect one. The knife has become nothing but a skill kill mechanisim.
What pisses me off more, are the retards that see a knife fight and decide to shoot into it. They should all be stabed.

The number of knife fights is proportional to how much people feel like dicking around in a game. Back when we only had counterstrike to entertain us online, people would dick around a lot. Now we a plethora of options most of which we are still trying to get the swing of. Don't confront me about knife fighting etiquette while I am still figuring out how to switch weapons.

If you want to get into a good melee while playing an FPS then go find an fps built around that style of play. There is a free Half Life Two mod called "Battle Grounds" which is set in the American Revolution. That means 20 second reload times for inaccurate muskets, and fixed Bayonets. That game is meant to be played at close ranges with pointy metal bits.

Knife fights are fun and all but you can't just force people to have one with you. how can i tell te differance between this sacred dualing initiation and someone just trying to knife me for a humiliation.

I really like shooting people, so I'll shoot you.

That happened in Gears of War as well You would step away from someone and swing your shotgun they would swing back if they accept the shotgun fight then you would both do a full reload to show you didn't have active reload bullets and then shotgun fight.
Most of the time the just shot you in the face but that's why you stand away when you swing so you can duck behind cover if they do. Always fun when it gets down to 1 on 1 and that happens with everyone watching.

You should try communication beyond just pointing a sharp weapon in somebody's face. If someone ran up to me with a knife, I'd probably shoot them too; it's a notch to the kill count.

Sorry, but what fool brings a knife to a gun fight. If you are standing there swinging your knife at me, I would shoot you. Unless you spoke up pregame and asked for knife duels... but I might still shoot you.

Turok is all I need to say in response to this thread. You can either play the game using skill (aka guns) since they are loaded with rubber bullets and take a clip to take anyone down. Or you can charge a guy with your knife and kill him with a single hit. And then cry about it when someone shoots you in the face while you run at them with your knife out. If it is agreed upon before that match starts for a melee mash up go for it. I am all game. I won't be the douche to ruin it. If there is no agreed upon set of rules I will shoot you in the face if you flash me your knife. I am not going to rely on luck to beat you. And to me the knife fight is just luck. Whoever hits the button faster wins.

I like to view games by the phrase:

"Any idiot can bring a gun to a knife fight, but it takes a special kind of idiot to bring a
spork"

I rarely play online (only having a basic Xbox I see no point) but frequently play 4-player split-screen, or occasionally play online at a mates house. now this is all very well, but what does it have to do with the above phrase?

I refuse to get a knife (or any melee weapon) when challenged by an opponent armed as such. Instead, I find the stupidest, most unexpected way to kill them, preferably without a weapon.

Since I frequently play Halo2 and 3, and there are sword-only fights, I like to try and drop vehicles on people (gunning the vehicle up to a jump, then leaping out before it takes off, and sending it across the map as a large mortar-shell-ACME-anvil hybrid (and the spork of the analogy). Or lure people into targetting me too near the egde and jumping appropriately so they get hurled over and I survive.

Games other than Halo require different methods, depending on what's around. Sometimes you have to kill them yourself (no vehicles, no movable terrain, no teleporters to block), which is when I either go with no weapon whatsoever or the biggest, noisiest anti-matter weapon I can find (chaingun, multiple-rocket launcher etc).

What when was there knife etiquette in FPSs? Im a veteran of the early CS days and i never saw this. Only thing i can remember that comes close is the 2 person knife charge on the other team, which was suicide but very fun. So no, i have no idea what the hell you are talking about.

EDIT: Also what did you expect when you charge a man holding a gun? Shouldnt you have messaged them first with your intentions?
Definitely. If the developers intended it, it's fair game (Due to this belief I must grudgingly accept the Sandman in TF2).

Melee fights were good when the melee weapons were much weaker. In today's games like COD4, where you could run out of ammo and the other weapon would take too long to retrieve, you can quickly try knifing and often it would work much more effectively. In TF2, some classes don't have such great closerange weapons (Demoman, Sniper) so they just use their melee weapon. Only in some older games like Counterstrike are they restricted to the situation where you might want to humiliate someone.
