No. Cheats were neat things that got around through word of mouth. Again, NEAT THINGS, not required. I could not care less about whether or not they're in a game or not.

While the lack of cheats don't deter me from a game, I do see the appeal of cheats. Basically, I don't care for cheats but they are nice extras.

They were always sort of nice to have, but I don't really miss them at all. I can't really even think of the last game I played that had me thinking "I'd enjoy this more if it had some sort of cheat codes."
These are my sentiments as well.

RTS's are pretty fun with cheats, but I can't remember ever playing a RPG or Shooter and thinking "I wish I had cheats".

I guess they're nice to have for some games but skipping a potentially fantastic game just because you can't activate God mode seems like extremely poor judgement.

Whatever floats your boat I guess...

Codes to unlock things (say, cars in a racing game or levels in a shooter) are fine for a quick-fix to "hey I just got this new game...wanna try it out?" only to be limited to the barebones presentation of a game.

My biggest example of this was F-Zero-X (just recently re-purchased a replacement copy). 6 cars and 5 tracks for a long night of multiplayer racing? I think not. A handful of button presses and the game was great again.

But "gameplay" cheats are for people other than myself.

For me, cheats were never a way to get an edge in a game, more like easter eggs. Let me kind of explain myself here, I do not mean the 'I have everything and full health/armor' type cheats like you see in GTA or something like that, I mean the fun cheats like from Goldeneye 007, Big head mode, paintball mode, etc. Those 'cheats' made the single player time hilarious and multiplayer would die from laughing.

edit: when I mentioned the Goldeneye ones, I do know you can unlock them normally, but there was a codebook cheat on how to get them without doing the singleplayer.

Another thing that seems to be dying on any system that isn't from Nintendo, couch co-op, from all the other systems I've seen, triple A titles never seem to want people to go to each other's houses anymore, there is a true kick when you're in person with your friends during particularly difficult parts of coop story or during random insanity of coop vs or regular vs. A good example would be Resident Evil 5, I never played it alone, but mostly with a buddy of mine and it was spectacular.

Perhaps you should just switch to reading books or watching movies, or playing Cluedo by yourself, because there's absolutely no challenge to any of these things...

Why play a videogame if you're just going to remove all of the challenge involved?
Not everyone plays games for challenge, you know.

Sometimes I like to pretend I'm a superhero. Also, I play on a console, so unless you PC guys up there can figure out how I can mod games on my console without pirating and screwing with the ISO file of a game, I'm all ears.

Most games still have cheats, but not in the traditional sense. For example, in Sleeping Dogs if you do all the side missions and collectibles you end the game ridiculously over-powered and with a map to every secret in the game.

Same with New Game Plus modes that are becoming an industry standard: playing through a game again with all your weapons and health maxed out is essentially God Mode.

I seriously have to question what kind of gamer robs themselves of fantastic experiences just because they can't cheat at the game...is there some reason you need cheats? Or do you just suck so bad that you can't enjoy them normally?

Maybe I'm giving away my age here, but what happened to the days where people beat games on their own merits? I don't mind unlocking cheats, but my dad taught me when we gamed together (mind you, I'm 30 now, it was gaming on the Sega Master System and the Genesis) that you didn't use any cheat codes until you could beat the game on your own. How can people say that they've beaten games like the GTA series if they have to keep putting in the code to cancel your wanted rating? It's like saying YOU got an A+ on a book report, when all you did was read the cover and hand it off to someone else to do for you.

I guess, long story short, cheats are fun, but if you have to use them to beat a game, you didn't beat it. And before you call me out on the same thing that EVERYONE calls me out on: Yes, I have beaten Contra with 3 lives. lol

Cheats totally ruined several games for me. after i knew them, i always had to resist using them in difficult situations. in Serious Sam, Doom,Hitman and the like, they can be fun for a replay but they can totally mess up the experience if you learn about them in the first playthrough

Cheats aren't a turn off or a turn on; having them or a lack thereof wouldn't affect my decision to play a game or not. However I have no issue with them and do enjoy using them. Generally, I play through a game at least once or twice without any at all, and usually on the harder difficulties. My favourite is New Game+...I love this mode for allowing me to enjoy the game with a character I already put the time and effort into, with all my inventory and armaments intact, also with the ability to play the story differently, or experiment with new strategies with the tried and tested ones as backup.

I tried Hitman: Absolution but it was really no fun. I used a trainer to give infinite "Instinct" because frankly it's a stupid frikking mechanic that ruins the game, not enhances it. There was a marked improvement, however the game still sucked enough that I gave up on it before even finishing Act I.

Generally, if I cheat, I do so "within the system" as it were. I will allow my character the best of what's legimately available to them in the game. Removing money from the equation can often enhance a game significantly, taking out the frustrating struggle and the need to constantly loot everything. Skyrim is a good example...after once levelling smithing/enchanting/alchemy/sneaking the normal way, on a subsequent playthrough I didn't bother. I still levelled everything else normally, just not those stupid grindy ones. And I removed the need to loot every iron breastplate and steel gauntlets I came across, struggling to find enough merchants (through multiple load screens) to sell them to.

As a PC gamer, particularly one with a lifetime sub to Cheathappens, I almost never have trouble filling my cheating needs. I'm not afraid of save editors, or in the case of Mass Effects 2 & 3, editing the coalesced.ini (in addition to NG+).

I do miss the Capcom cheats on the SNES though....what was it...up up down down left right left right y b x a?

Some games are designed for sandbox fun, fair enough.

However ONLY playing games for cheats? Sorry but that's just missing the point. Games are designed to be mentally challenging, they are often doing this on varying scales, with some games being easier than others, but the challenge is there in most games in some form or another.

When it isn't, then it's hardly a game and more of an interactive movie, or just a movie.
Fair enough. I have a lot of games that don't have cheats actually. I don't play games for the cheats, but a lot of games have a high level of challenge, so sometimes the cheats help ease the difficulty up a bit so I can get used to the mechanics, then I can turn them off and start ramping it up.

Besides which, there are cheats that make games harder. For example, ever seen that skyrim video that had 12 elder dragons attacking the city of markarth? Yeah, the player probably didn't run into them randomly.

Based on the poll count, publishers aren't exactly losing out a lot of money by not catering to the 'we want cheats, old-school' demographic. Apparently people can find enjoyment from a game's core mechanics and narrative.

I remember unlocking the cheats on Goldeneye 64. To unlock each, one had to complete a given level with specific objectives and within a very tough time. Unlocking each was a difficult challenge and the reward was the ability to have fun with the game with many different options. One couldn't use a cheat to unlock a cheat however, so the only way to get it was fair and square. I think that was one of my personal favourite implementations.

Strangely, I'm not so keen on exploits, ie. unintended loopholes within a game allowing unintended benefits. I cannot explain why I don't like them, particularly when I have no issue with using mods, dev consoles, trainers or save editors.

I miss the unlockable cheats that you used to be able to get in games. A good example of this is Goldeneye 64. Where you had to achieve certain difficult objectives in missions and you got various cheat codes for doing so.

Really, the lack of cheats makes you not buy games . I don't even know what to say to that . This is the very first time i've ever heard about this .

OT: No , i never used cheats anyways .
