I figure a heavy story would have made it to serious.
Game is supposed to play out like a cheesy B movie, and it does beautifully.

its supposed to be bland and empty - thats the selling point, taking unsophisticated to the next level
the story is in the wall writing

It's not supposed to have one: 'It's a Zombie apocalypse, survive.' is all that is needed.

No story works for me.

Personally I found it refreshing to be given a game which doesn't clutter great gameplay with poorly written storyline. Since the game is intended for cooperative play I always assumed they created it with the intention that the players be left to make it all up for themselves.

I find that when me and my friends play together we always choose the same characters, partly this is out of habit I suppose but it could be said that we making that unconscious decision because we have come to associate ourselves and the avatar with a particular role in the team. I don't know, I'm just theorising.

The big thing here is, games don't NEED stories. I mean, would it have helped the experience? Not really. Valve was aiming for fun zombie-based action, and that's all they needed to invest their time in.

You haven't been gaming for a very long time, have you?
There are plenty of games that have absolutely no storyline and still shine.

It was ok without a story but maybe a little something at the start of the game where it gives a tiny bit more of a background as to what happened or even if they put it into the game manual for those who cared.

take gears for instance, awful story, awesome game, sometimes stories can just pollute an experience.

If you listen to the commentary, they tell you that the cause for the zombie apocalypse is 'a rabies-like virus'. Also I like the non-story but I fell that you can still get partially attached to the characters, even just the people writing on the wall.It all depends on whether you really want to care or not.

I like the way you find hints at the greater story in each level. Its similar to TF2 in that respect and I wouldn't have it any other way. I'm trying to do the same thing for my L4D campaign at the moment, with hints dropped at just what went on in the labs the levels are set in.

I usually cite Gears as a story that does what I expect it to do: in a game where you play a 200-kilo hulking brute with a chainsaw-rifle, I wouldn't expect the story to be amazing. All I want the story to do is to give me a reason to be where I am. In other words, I need some sort of explanation for why my character can't just leg it, and that's exactly what it does.
Crysis' story, on the other hand, just gets in the way of the mediocre gameplay, which makes it seem even worse.

heres what i figure

The Zombie strain is a form of rabies found in beef and such, it was actually a growth hormone made by CEDA, They did not find out about the mutations until later. basicly, if you ate meet during then, you dead

If the story was a single player only thing, that would work. But if I was forced to watch the story for the 200'th time at points in a versus match, I would not have played as much as I did

Zombies here, you too. They want you dead, you want them dead too, but there are more of them than there is of you. Run like hell and shoot some of them before GTFO'ing.

Easy, eh?
