So today I am 18 and am now legally and officially and adult according to the American government. I am held fully responsible for smoking, gambling, credit cards, the whole shibang. So, because I now each country has different laws, what is the legal age of an adult in your country and do you think that it is a good age to be held responsible for every action or do you think that it should be a higher/lower age?
You forgot something. You can legal buy a shotgun or a rifle at 18. You still have to be 21 to buy a pistol.

I'm 19 and British- I can do whatever I like. Within reason, anyway.
is it reasonable to cockslap the Queen with a bright pink condom covered in banana lube from a speeding taxi?

because i've got stuff planned for my birthday.

OT: what he said.
Only if it's made in Britain. Also, you're allowed to punch a swan. As long as it is a certain breed of swan.

alcohol consumption age in the states is regulated by the state I believe

I think Louisiana is the only state that allows drinking at 18, but it's been a while since I heard that so it could have changed by now.

Age of consent (sex) is also regulated by state. Some even have a diff age for guys and girls.

I thought 21 was the age in America?
21 ia the legal drinking age in the States. Come to Canada, its 18 most places. Except Ontario, which sucks since I live there and I have to be 19.
It's also 19 in BC and Saskatchewan. Alberta, on the other hand...

In Australia, 18 is the legal age for everything, except sex, which is 16, and we're allowed learner permits at 16, but have to have a licensed driver with us. We get our P plates at 18 and a full license at 21.

I have to admit that I personally think the legal drinking age should be raised to 21. Research shows that drinking, especially binge drinking, while the brain is still developing (it stops around the age of 24) can do permanent damage to short and long term memory. Also, a lot of fatal car accidents seem to involve P platers. Taking alcohol out of the equation might save some lives.
which is why we do it like that here in America, at least according to my driving instructors.

South Africa at 16 years of age you can have an ID book, learner's driving permit (for car and bike), have sex and legally leave high school. At 18 you can drink/buy all alcoholic drinks and receive a matriculation from high school. Finally at 21 you are allowed to own a gun.

Congratz of the 18th by the way!

That's only for alcohol consumption.
In America you are legally accountable for everything EXCEPT liquor, which somehow makes sense to the government...
Then we can pretty much agree that 21 is the real adult age in america. Because it DOESN'T make sense that you can be held legally accountable for everything except liquor at the age of 18.

I live literally five minutes away from Quebec, so it annoys me more. Not that it stops me from going to their convenience stores for drinks.

Legal age is 18 in Saskatchewan[footnote]But 19 in BC, making it hilarious that I actually needed my parent's permission to go to university in writing.[/footnote] It's a good age I think.

Drinking starts at 19, smoking at 18. Oh and voting :D

[sub]Can't remember if the juvenile criminal record gets 'wiped' then or not.[/sub]

UK it wavers between 16 and 18. Used to be 18 for driving or drinking, 16 for everything else. Now it's 18 for Smoking and Drinking (stupid idea), 17 for driving, and 16 or everything else. C'est la vie.

Everything is 18 in Britain, and I like it that way, except driving at 17, which makes sence so you don't immediatly drink and drive.
Apart from voting. And sex. And gun ownership. And purchase of livestock.

Legal drinking age in Germany is 16 for "weaker" stuff like beer and wine, but you have to be 18 for hard alcohol like vodka and shnapps.
Under the age of 16, it's the parents' responsibility, so it's not a crime to drink wine or stuff like that if you're under 16 as long as your parents allow it.

I think that's a pretty good system. I'm not a big fan of the government invading everyone's private lives.

Well I did make an incorrect blanket statement, but to be honest I didn't realise the voting age was 16, I never thought about purchasing livestock or guns and to be in Razzle you have to be 18, so I didn't think about the actual age about sex. I also didn't mention that you could join the Armed Forces at 16, but 18 is the age where you are considered an adult in the eyes of the law.

18 for everything except sex and leaving high school which you can do at 16 and driving is 17, apparently going up though. This is England btw.
