Fire Temple, because it felt like the longest with five semi-large floors and yet it never got boring with dozens of unique obstacles, some of which were actually challenging. Many of its rooms have a kind of 'steam filter' effect, and I was also lucky enough to get the original version's music.

Funny thing is, before buying Twilight Princess I saw a mention of the Goron Mines and then a mention of the Fire Temple which led me to believe they were two seperate dungeons with the much harder Temple coming later on. Considering only a portion of the Mines was an actual 'Fire' dungeon they could have easily revamped the Fire Temple to be bigger and badder than ever. A missed opportunity.

The water temple wasn't executed right. It had some great ideas, but it doesn't do it for me.

The spirit temple is by far the coolest and has the coolest boss(es).

Water Temple. Cause no other level brought me greater pleasure when it was over. I had a hell of a hard time with that dungeon.

*ninja edit** WOOHOO 400th post!

No bodies, no corpses. No purpose. The well is more of the catacombs.
The Shadow Temple is situated behind the graveyard. You can only find it with a Sheik's song, and even then, the door is sealed; you break it using the goddess' magic. Within the first few minutes of the dungeon, you find a corridor with skulls built into the walls. With the eye of truth, you pass through into a secret door, and it holds a single redead. Continuing on, you find another room. Inside, a humanoid enemy with a grotesquely stretched neck attacks you, while pale hands extend from the floor, grasping at you whenever you come near. The walls outside speak: "The shadow temple... Here is gathered Hyrule's bloody history of greed and hatred".

It's a hidden catacomb, and a hidden prison, holding the most evil of Hyrule's thieves, murderers, and traitors. Only the Sheiks know how to access it, and only the Sheiks know that it exists; weaker minds would be overwhelmed by the intensity of the pent-up hatred and evil that fills the place.

I do like your idea, though.

I have to say, I loved the shadow temple. The creepy music, the desperate feeling of being lost, the dark undertones, the story it has to tell... It is meant to drain all hope, even with the item it's supposed to give you. It's just amazing, and the strange event of finding a pair of boots that are will keep you up but eventually cause you to fall perfectly encapsulate what the temple is about. Destroying all feeling that you will make it through safely.

BUT, every single dungeon in that game is oozing with great design. The Zelda team is awesome

But thats the thing - that is the entrance hall, the place of resting of the ways to walk upon the air. Beyond there? Beyond there is only evil, serving no purpose but to kill any who tries to enter it, but to kill them slowly, almost joyfully.
No, that's... That was just an example. The place is filled with dead-end rooms with little more than zombies in them. Guillotine blades, a decidedly executioner-style device, feature throughout.

There's a large room, with sections taken out of the walls, and a pair of grim reaper statues rotating in the middle, massive scythe blades cutting the air at waist-height. It is a set of cells without bars, inviting the inmates to escape, if they think they can. In that same room, a corridor leads off towards a plaque, with a trap floor beneath it. You fall into a real cage. Even further in, there's another room, much the same; except here, the grim reaper statues, and their blades, are invisible.

To set the boat in motion, you must play Zelda's lullaby, a special song known only by those close with the Hyrule Royal Family. On the other side of the river, there are no more cells. Instead, there's an invisible maze, rooms of executioner's tools, and the lair of the dungeon boss.

A tomb near the entrance, a prison throughout, and in the depths, only reachable by a boat that must be attended by someone trusted by the Royal Family, the execution chambers. Purpose enough for you?

I voted for the Water Temple because I have to give credit to the unique puzzles involving the water levels and the zora tunic and the iron boots, and one of the more memorable boss fights of the game.

However, I do think that the atmosphere in the Forest Temple was PERFECT. And the creepiness in the Bottom of the Well and the Shadow Temple got to me so much as a kid that I sometimes STILL have nightmares about them.

My favorite game of all time; and with good reason.

I think, though, that we can all agree, that that temple wasn't just a series of traps - that thing was filled with pure evil. They really need to drop the bullshit and send us back into the maw of that deep terror, of things like this and Majoras Mask.
Well Twilight Princess was pretty dark for a Zelda game, I mean especially the last parts.
Not really. For my money, the far darker game overall is Majoras Mask, Think about it - alien abductions, Gerudos stealing children, the gorons dieing out in the cold, the Dekus slowly poisoned, the entire Ikana canyon thing, the two lovers who can never truly be together, and so on, up until the entire world is destroyed.
Oh of course Majora's Mask is the darkest game of all the series. I was just saying Twilight Princess had its moments.

Fire dungeon was my favorite for "awesomeness" as far as genius in level design goes, has to be the water dungeon

Edit: LOVE the music in the fire dungeon
The scene where you learn the Bolero of Fire impressed itself on my memory with its fiery passion and beautiful composition.

I was a bit divided but the Forest Temple over the Spirit Temple. The tense, eerie music and the rush of fighting Gannon's avatar make it one of the more exciting sections of the game. There was also more puzzle variety than most of the temples with the Poe Sisters and twisting hallways thrown in.

This is all making so much sense now!
Damn why didn't I ponder on this when first playing it?

But they did get away with using the symbols of Islam (crescent moon and star) in the Spirit Temple and on the Mirror Shield.
Hehehehe.
Until they changed those symbols too; in the GameCube updated version they use a different symbol, similar to the abstract pattern on the blocks in Wind Waker.

After careful consideration, I vote Shadow Temple. Upon getting over my initial dread of ReDeads and the other spooky things in there, I think it has the most impactful atmosphere. Look closely around if you're one of those people that like to play through several times, you'll notice torture devices, bloodstains, and even creepy bird statues...what are those for!?!

The water temple in the Master Quest remake.

You thought that shit was hard before!
Oh man, Master Quest.. Playing it, losing and imagining it smirk at your pitiful attempts at outsmarting it leaves you with the kind of shame that you can't wash away
