Online with friends is the way to go, each has own xbox and tv plus it's fun to destroy other teams of random people just because you work so well with your buddies. My fav thing to do is just whole teams of noob tubes in cod4 or only using deagles
definitley local. it seems the online crowd has a conjoined iq of 45, seems to be the combined age as well. the internet gave the world a voice and it just sat on the mic.
Local, fo' sure. Gallons of booze, tons of scran and a bunch of friends to shoot in the face. What's not to love?
Perhaps games developers aren't so keen - one copy per four gamers, or one copy each? - but online just isn't the same; too often it's about camping and kill ratios, rather than having fun.

online because hearing everyone shout racist slurs and homophobic comments gives one a smug sense of moral superiority
I definetly prefer Local, sure there's screen looking, but I'd rather that than a random person calling me a fag and cheater for doing what I was supposed to.
(and on a side note, I hate how most games popping up sacrifice solo play in favor of online cluster****s, *cough*halo3*cough)

most people that play games online (or at least where I play), are the type of people who spend every waking moment of their life playing games.
Which is annoying when you want to unwind and play, that you get your stress levels up, when some #&% can shoot you in a fraction of a second from 3 miles away..
Plus, I like being able to sort out who I play with, which I'm not when I'm playing online.
And theres nothing better than smearing verbal torment in the face of someone, who you won a game over, face to face.

LAN party is the best my house has 3 decent computers always linked up then one guy brings a laptop 4-way diablo 2 co-op or unreal tournament nothing like trash talking opponets only 6 feet away
Last weekend I fused those two together it was fun.
I prefer LANing to anything, but it depends on who I'm with, last Easter we held a LAN, invited all our friends, had a giant projector used for Guitar Hero and movies. Laned for the whole Easter Holidays.
This was in a giant hall aswell, and we all slept there

Food, friends and the ability to show off your kick ass rig, much more fun than yelling at randoms online.
Its also good to be able to inflect physical punishment upon the person that killed you or screwed the plan up.

I'd have to say online probably because I don't exactly like to leave my house which means that I don't have many friends in RL.
