Yes yes, I know that I have been posting a lot of polls about "music in video games", however, I just have so many questions so I really would like to know. This question comes mainly from a trend that I see from later games. Imagine this: you are playing a shooter and for about thirty seconds there is an awesome theme played. You just start to get into the music and then it goes away, leaving just the gun noises and such in the backround.

Personally I find this annoying and I prefer games that used to have looping music (ex: FF, Star Ocean, the works). I find that whenever a song is looping that I find myself enjoying the game more and whenever it starts to annoy me, I go through it faster so that I can get a little change, that or I just tune it out. I find in games that don't loop (Ex: Half-life 2, Halo, Call Of Duty, ect.) that I tend to lose interest in the game and get lost more and go away from the objective because I wasn't paying attention.

I can see reasons though for not liking looping music. Things like becoming annoyed at the repeated theme, too much sound or a distracting theme to take away from the game. I can really see the defense. But I like it more when they loop

Am I the only one that does this or are there others?

Poll: Do you like it when video games loop music?

p.s: I usually add a third neutral choice to my polls, however in this case I know that people would go with that choice. I know it is a hard call; even for me. However, I really want some different answers.

I grew up on games with looping music like the Castlevanias and Final Fantasys. Quite frankly I miss me some looping MIDI music.

Well, I don't think music plays an important part unless it is a very atmospheric game, so it really depends on the game for me.

To me, it depends if the tune is catchy and keeps the mood.

Now if they keep the same tune throughout the whole game, then we have a problem.

If they change the tune every stage/fight/scene but it loops in the scene, as long as it fits the mood, then its ok to me.

If the music's... y'know... good (see the earlier Sonic games, especially Sonic CD and some of the Final Fantasy games, as long as your battle doesn't go on for too long) then I don't have a problem. I don't care that much though.

The only game where looping music really grated was Pokémon Colosseum. Mainly because the animations (especially the establishing shots before you start) took far too long and the music looped back pretty quickly.

It really depends. Looping music that is only twenty-seconds short or less gets incredibly grating. Or worse... short, looping ambiance. *shudder*

Generally though, I prefer looping music. Reality be damned, I want to hear those techno beats!

If looping msuic was a bother to me, I would have stopped playing retro Tetris a long time ago.

But, in all seriousness, I don't mind looping in a video game if it is A: Done correctly and B: I don't notice it. When I say done correctly, I mean that the end of the song can immediately pick right up at the beginning of the piece...like the classic theme for Tetris. The song is about 16 bars worth of music but as soon as it ends, it can go right back to the beginning without any complaints.

I can't think of an example where the looping of music was noticeable and annoying, but you get the jist of what I am talking about.

Considering that the alternatives are single-play into silence, or just silence all round, I'll be thankful that music loops.

I have no problem with looping as long as it works and doesn't sound choppy.

Naruto: Rise of a Ninja is a terrible example of this. Hearing the village theme, over and fucking over, not even fitting together properly got so irritating I actually turned the game off and traded it in.

usually it's ok, but for certain games, like Silent Hill, it's needed. I can see how it would get really annoying though.

I voted yes entirely for the Triple Triad music from FFVIII.

It all depends on the music. If the music itself sounds alright than I can generally stand it even if it plays for hours. If it's utter garbage than I hope to hell it doesn't loop, and if it does I start to play through as fast as I can to avoid having to listen to it anymore. Most music doesn't really annoy me though, so thankfully this hasn't happened often.

If there's a various tracks for situational things with a long run time and variation. Yes. If it's just three seconds or three bleeps being repeated. Hell, no.

I voted "Yes," but one occasion where looping music is generally not good is in first-person survival horror games. Condemned comes to mind, a game that's supposed to be very gritty and in-your-face with tension so thick you could physically poke it with a lead pipe. It relies on very "real" atmospheres to draw you into the moment, and I can guarantee that had there been looping music instead of looping ambient sound effects, it would break the immersion by reminding me that this isn't real. The sound of hearing absolutely nothing is all I need to feel tense, and all it takes is the sound of a bucket tipping over to spook me out. Music would ruin that effect.

Zelda does the whole looping thing really well. Hyrule field from ocarina could loop all day and I wouldn't get sick of it. It helps that the loop is over 5 minutes long and has randomly changing parts to better suit the mood (discordant near enemies, quiter near sunset etc.)
So yeah, I reckon the half life stuff should have looped for as long as the scene was at any rate, music is few and far between as it is, and I always get a little pissed when I rush a scene to keep pace with the music, but then get it cut off with loading or something. They made great strides with left 4 dead, though to me the whole dynamic music thing was just catching up to what zelda started years ago.
Nintendo have always been the best for Loops I think...

Pokemon has a wonderful example of good looping. I go on youtube for the battle themes half the time because I can't get enough.

Just about every JRPG I've played has good music that flows well when looped.

It depends on the structure of the score.

I didn't mind the looping in Shadow of The Colossus, because the score lends itself very well for multiple verses. But hearing that same fucking J-pop song in Bayonetta made my ears bleed.

Really depends on the music. If the song is good, looping tends to make you addicted to it so that you find yourself waking up in tears, sweat and agony, crawling over to your pc to get that desperatly needed Youtube fix. If the song is terrible, it usually ends in a disc being snapped.
