Nice. Why?

Because I could always leave the room. Make excuses or something, and leave for a walk if I wanted to be alone for a while.
Simples.
This. I had someone to satiate my needs and desires throughout most of collage. (Well, not all my desires... but this is what you get for looking in the wrong places.)

The part I don't get though, why not man the fuck up, get work, and find your own place with someone you can trust? Don't gimme dat no time to study crap. A dorm is roughly three quarters of renting a 2 bedroom (Around here, anyway.) and is tacked onto your tuition. I guess that's a plus if you have absolutely no control over spending habits but it's really not that hard. Even living with someone who is incredibly obnoxious and vehemently annoying to live with is a far more survivable experience than a 7-11 box with two bunks and a desk. Provided the bills are in their name. (Don't repeat my mistakes, please! D:)

While I'll admit that not everywhere is like Cape Breton (Oh god, oh god! Your leaving!? Take me with you!!) but it can't be that difficult to find someone you know enough to feed your cat while your away to share a place with.

But if he were indeed a nice guy he would sit in the corner staring at the wall with his fingers in his ears while you had "some alone time"
He shouldn't have to. I know it's not as sexy... But, bathroom anyone? Some form of self control? What are you, 16?

I'd take the jackass who's there less often. You can just ignore him when he is.

If you get stuck with the guy who's always there, you can always go out if it bugs you...I think the trouble really just occurs when you get two or more people who never leave.

Just an anecdote about 2 people who never leave...well once at a college I was staying at (I'm still in high school but I spent 6 weeks taking courses there) they had suite dorms, ie rooms that held up to 8 people (at this school). Not one of them left the dorm for anything beyond class or food, and were just rarely seen in public in general. They didn't usually invite anyone in either. It was sort of a running joke about what we would find if we were to open the door. Theories ran from them being a secret terrorist cell to a clan of ninjas or vampires (or ninja vampires) or a never ending gay orgy to them just all being dead.

.... you have an interesting idea of what a "nice" guy should do.

Good question, OP. I went with the quiet person as I don't like confrontation and imagine them hundreds of times in my head playing out all different ways. It's stressful in there.

not should, would. I'd reciprocate, if you are constantly together you'll eventually have to breach the subject or can you magically go without masturbating for ever.

I'd also just like to point out that i'm just countering the argument of manic depressive that to masturbate you need to pick the loud and annoying option.
It was an off the cuff remark, hardly like this was something I was concerned about!

I wouldn't want to share a room full stop. But forced to choose, someone who's always there but not cracking one off while I'm around is definitely preferable. If I don't notice they're there, it's like they're not.

This sounds like a lose/lose situation. Loud roommates are noisy, annoying and will hurt your work effort. Quiet roommates are dastardly and planning, probably sneaking through your stuff when you are out of the room.

That being said; I'd prefer the quiet dude. I like being alone with my thoughts and writing is much easier in silence.

My roommate and I are very much in the second category. We're always in the room, and we almost totally ignore each other.

Sleep in the same room as another human being when not on a military field exercise? Does.not.compute.
I guess I'm rather spoiled in this regard. I absolutely cannot stand cohabitating with anyone, and I've never had to, outside of military training and deployment... but that requires a completely different mindset from just living somewhere.

Back in the day when I was in school, I took what I would've spent for room and board and used it for my share of a fairly nice two bedroom apartment instead. It easily covered rent, utilities, and food. Sharing an apartment or house with people is fine, but sharing a room with people is for chumps.

I require time alone. It's not just a "every now and then I need to unwind" kind of thing. It's a "if there are too many people around me for too long I cannot function and my fight or flight instinct kicks on and I have to leave." It's never happened before, but I'm pretty sure I'd hurt someone if they tried to get in my way in such a situation.

I'd rather have the occasional jerk than to have someone always around.

I reject both possibilities, in favor of the old "Funny Farm" method: "Here's money, go away."

But if I HAD to choose... I think the obnoxious guy, depending on your definition of "obnoxious." If you're referring strictly to the part about the guy masturbating, and all else being minor annoyances, then I think I could live with that.
On the other hand, if the roommate turns out to be a gigantic bro, then... one or both of us may be horribly maimed inside of a month.
If the roommate turns out to be a gigantic hipster, then I would bash his pretentious skull in with every Apple product he owns. Then make him choke on his fake glasses.

Maybe the quiet guy won't care what I'm doing, though. I mean, I'll have to keep my less savory, erm, "preferences" private... OH, and I keep irregular hours anyway, so I guess we could coexist, anyway.
