Hmmm, much as people love to slag on Mr. Lucas, seems he can be a pretty decent sort. Is this a surprising move on George's part or something that was expected?

A bit late to try and win back the hearts and minds of the public :\

It's still a good deed, so good on him :D

Frak. Between that and the comment about wanting to see the Star Wars franchise passed on to safe hands during his lifetime, I'm really starting to think that this is just like when Steve Jobs stepped down from Apple. I'm thinking George may not be with us much longer. :(

I respect the man somewhat. He did what he loves and retired at his peak +20 meters... It's better than continuing to milk it. Much, much better. He's now retired. He's so rich now that he doesn't need to work - his money makes him money.

Yeah, all this just seems like he knows something we don't, maybe a medical condition?

or you know, he ustwants to sit back and take life easy. I mean george isn't exactly a young man anymore, and even if he is healthy now he probably doesn't have that much time left. Also his comments in the interview he game about being excited to finally be able to see star wars from a distance and be a fan seem to indicate that he isn't on his deathbed or anything.

This also seems in character for him, at least from my perspective. Never got why so many people seemed to think of him as a scrooge of sorts.

Always nice to see the mega rich giving their money for better causes. Nobody needs that much money and while I'm no fan of his movies this is pretty awesome so good on you Mr. Lucas

Eventually, all people with that much money do something like this. It's not unsurprising.

Good guy Lucas!
I'm happy that he decided to call it a day and retire.

Let's see if 1. he actually donates it, and 2. what the recipient is.

Donating $4 billion to organizations like PETA is a very scary thought.

EDIT: I'm not surprised by his generous intent though. He's known for butchering his own franchise, not his erm... selfishness.

It's tragic how often that's not true.

But hey, good on Lucas. Good to see people like him taking advantage of what they can do.

I don't find his generosity surprising to be honest, the guy has always been a good bloke, just because he isn't the best at making movies doesn't make him a bad person. So, good on him.

this actually made me smile. i know i complain about George being bad but honestly. all he did was stretch a franchise a little more then it could take. besides maybe diseny will do some fun changes to star wars. like give the death star Micky mouse ears. this is fantastic. who needs 4.5 billion anyway (something inside my head just screamed "ME!") why not let people who need it have it. he is still rich enugh to buy every single pair of shorts in the world and have them burned. no more shorts for you

i applaud people who are willing to donate most of their money like this to try and make the world a better place
agreed if you got so much money your only complaint is that your wallet looks untidy or just just have some spare change after buying a snickers bar and there's a red cross or UNICEF bucket near by. you should donate. if you have more money then you need. give it to somebody who doesn't have but need.

I do like to believe that he really means it. I never said he was a bad person, he's just very, very bad at knowing when to stop with his own creations.

He can't buy back the trust and respect he once had, so I do hope he's not bitter about it, and his effort comes from a genuine place in his heart to do good, not a futile attempt to buy back some sympathies. Dishing out money and being a good person is one thing, messing with Star Wars (and Indiana Jones for that matter) is something completely different.

Depends on how much it is

Donating 4 billion is a lot of money... a lot of fucking money. He could donate half that without much worry about living comfortably.

Well, we've not gotten reports that he has a serious form of cancer. Of course, lack of reports doesn't mean he's not unwell.
