Lydia's the only follower I ever brought with me anywhere, and I guess I had her around for half the game. I left her at home for the DB and Thieves Guild quests.

And if she died, I reloaded a save.

I just let her wander the house. Sometimes I forget about her, enter my room to change equipment and have the poop scared out of me when she suddenly speaks.

Followers are annoying and unnecessary. I have never used them in Skyrim. I did abuse a few, but that's a whole different story.

Lydia is only good as a loot hauler. I equipped her in full legendary Ebony armor and a legendary paralyzing ebony greatsword, and she still got her ass kicked regularly.

This mf'er takes on whole packs of Falmer Shadowmasters and even a damned Dwemer Centurion Master SOLO and in Apprentice Robes.

Also, he prefers lightning spells. I think he's secretly a sith kitty.
