I think as long as they're in different languages it's okay, since it won't take concentration away from the game to try and understand the lyrics.

For instance, the epic monk voices in so many songs that don't actually say any English words.

It really depends on the song and game
I can think of scenarios you wouldn't want singing like in non-boss monster battles because it get on your nerves or in mutiplayer combat games like cod or team fortress because of distraction

but there are games that with out the music would lose a lot of their charm like katimari damicy part of what made the first game so awesome was the music

and the cool theme for SSB:brawl would seem rather generic without those latian lyrics

not to mention chanting monks and what not can really set the mood in a horror game

I dont like it when Japanese music suddenly pops it's ugly head in. Im not saying they can't sign or anything but I don't speak the language so any extra emphases from having vocals is lost and frankly it's a little jarring.

Only something like RDR where nothing else is really going on, so the lyrics don't necessarily distract you from the game, they are just there to enhance the mood.

My basic thoughts can be summed up in this three-line saying;

Games have had both songs that I really like and songs that make want to turn the volume down to zero, with or without lyrics. The Devil May Cry series has most of my favorites.

The only game I can think of that used lyrical music well in a game is WET. Not a great game, but the music was freaking amazing.

well i was thinking more about music ingame since i wud have also put Still alive in the first comment but Phistiline is a song that is sung while your fighting that girl AKA a boss battle...You did intros, credit and optional songs....Midnight riders play from Jukebox...

I only accept the music with lyrics if either there is a justification of the lyrics in the game (i.e. someone in-game is singing a la Dragon Age), or for the credits song. Otherwise I find it extremely distracting and immersion-breaking.

Actually, Snake Eater, Love Theme and the Best is Yet to Come all play during gameplay, during the big ladder, the microwave corridor and upon entering the Shadow Moses heliport, respectively. Snake Eater also plays during the fight with Ocelot, and two of the Midnight Rider songs play during the Dark Carnival finale.

I usually don't mind it and sometimes I like it!

Example: 115-Elena Siegman... It's a great song
This song is on Black Ops, although it is hidden... does that still count?
Ugh. 155 is comfortably the worst Elena Siegman track used on the Nazi maps. I was very underwhelmed with it.

The One (from Shi No Numa) is my favourite.

It's like a bad Bond opening. A really bad Bond opening.

If we're counting songs that play during cut scenes, Kerli's When Nobody Loves You walks it.
