I don't really care, i'd say bring it on. I only ever fire 5-10 rounds at most per enemy when i'm using a machinegun anyway. On the other hand it would keep thickies away from the support classes, so yeah i'm certainly FOR overheating.

See I laugh everytime I see someone in WAW with a huge MG holding it in their hands like its a toy gun. Realisticly the recoil would blow it right out of their hands, thats why they had to mount it. Most likely it would burn their hands to, severely.
Assuming they have the typical nerd physique, which in-game characters really don't.

To be honest i have yet to see a game with "realistic" overheating. BF2's MG overheating is nothing like real life overheating.

In real life your gun's barrel will slowly melt causing accuracy to go down, but There's no magical bar that stops you from shooting, you just melt your gun's barrel over some length of continous bursting.
Ever play Red Orchestra?

I'd rather machineguns have a limited amount of ammo than an overheat. Or a more responsive trigger (like real life mg's lol) that can control the heat.
real machine guns dont have a responsive trigger. its only an on off position

Have you ever shot a gun?

I prefer overheating, as it means if you use it well, it probably won't affect you, but it also stops people from just firing it non stop as soon as they get hold of it.

For it, I mean you go into a game and start shooting like a shithead not requiring any kind of thinking. Whit overheating you have to actually give a crap on how you go in and how you plan to take out an enemy.

Oh here we go again. Yes i have and the recoil didn't send me flying. Have you?

Relax, I was just wondering read this:

" The shoulder stock is designed to permit gripping with the left hand to hold it secure against the shoulder. Considerable recoil otherwise causes the stock to creep from its intended position. If the weapon is not properly "seated" on the bipod, a prone gunner may be pushed back along the ground from the high recoil of this weapon. "

That is with it the bipod seated on the ground.

So it got me thinking whether having a realistic overheating mechanism on LMG's is a good thing or just a pain in the ass...your thoughs? :)
I don't like the overheat mechanism. The guns still run out of ammo. Realsim isn't necessarily fun. I like a more arcade shooter.

In most games I'd say it is an annoyance that isn't necessary. When I used to play BF2142 (do people still play that online?) it was annoying at first but you got used to it after a while and learned how to keep up fairly constant fire without being forced to wait ridiculously long for a cool down. I think the makes the most sense in games like CoD4 hardcore mode where one LMG in a right place can mow down 4, 5, 6, 10 or whatever number of people who run in front of the person without taking his finger off the trigger.

Though it doesn't really seem to be a factor in CoD4 because I've never noticed people with LMG's completely dominating every single hardcore server I've ever been in.

I like the system on Red Orchestra. It takes a lot to overheat it, but when you do you can change the barrel. Though to be honest I've never ACTUALLY changed the barrel because overheats result from me panicking from all the enemies in front of me. So I always die around the time it overheats...

CoD 4 needs overheat. I got fed up with people running around with their automatic sniper rifles aka rpd with grip attachment.

Definitely for. Call of Duty 4 doesn't do a very good job with its machine guns - they're inaccurate and not that powerful, usually bested by a good assault rifle or submachine gun. However, in other games they're portrayed very effectively as accurate and powerful, and heat is one way to regulate their effectiveness. World at War makes machine guns much more effective, as well, with the ability to mount them at strategic locations, but also rendering the player immobile when using them. They also need to be unmounted and remounted during reloading, so they become even more of a risk-reward proposition; in that case, overheating isn't needed as a gameplay mechanic.

its a useful balancing mechanism that stops people simply sitting in a corner n emptying 100+ rounds continuously at the same spot. For any game going for a level of "simulation" beyond the cartoonish, its a simple way to make players appreciate theres more to shooting a gun than spraying n praying.

for it, but honestly that "you can only fire when crouched/prone/stationary" situation sounds cooler. Adds another layer to combat.

Well I'm all for it if the MGs didn't over heat in bf2142 then they would be just like the assault rifles except higher damage and more ammo.

I suppose it depends on the definition of what's a machinegun. Personally, I label machinegun everything that fires tons of rounds a minute and that isnt an SMG.

So, basically, I think of the car-mounted minigun from that Mythbusters episode about shooting fish in a barrel...
Mini guns, 50 cals, c9's (i'm canadian) dont have pressure sensitive triggers. the trigger either fires or doesnt. the only amount of pressure sensitivity u could give it is by firing in bursts.
