A C9 LMG (I'm Canadian too, silly Americans calling it a SAW) on paper fires four hundred rounds before you change the barrels. Given that a belt is two hundred, and you're unlikely to fire that many consecutively anyways (whatever you're aiming at is probably dead after two belts), I don't think overheating is ever portrayed realistically.

Even then, jamming is not the issue. Melting your barrel, burning your hands, or starting to cook rounds off is the problem. This can happen to assault rifles too, but even less commonly than machine guns.

Really, overheating in games is NOT realistic in its portrayal. At all.

It depends, if the gun has infinite ammunition, then absolutely, if it has an ammo amount(unless it is something ridiculous like 8k rounds)then no.

In Red Orchestra if you manage to over heat the gun, you have to change the barrel. I thought that was pretty neat. Red Orchestra also had a class limit. So only 1 or 2 people on a 32 man team could be the Machine Gunner, I liked that addition as it stops kit spamming like in BF2 where at times more than half the server is using the Support kit with the PKM.

Instead of overheating, I think they should make MG's and other heavier weapons slower to target with. Meaning you can't turn as fast, or put the sights on your target as quickly. They should also have momentum. You swing 90 degrees with your heavy gun, and the sights slide past the target before coming back to where you wanted to aim. That's realistic. Also, movement should be slowed. Someone can sprint for a long way with a pistole, but with a MG? haha not very far at all....
Exactly.

Here is an assault configuration (only 100rd belt case) LMG being worn.

Even with the reduced amount of ammo, it weighs around 10kg. Try holding up 10kg with two hands at arm's length (steady, as if you were aiming) and see how long you can do so. A soldier will, of course, have at least 15kg more on his body at the same time.
In short, a LMG cannot be used accurately (with sights) in combat for any duration of time while moving or standing upright.

The right way to balance a LMG is not to make it another assault rifle, but to make it semi-useless while moving, and a total murder machine once prone and stationary. It's a tactical support weapon. Its user should be dependent on his teammates for protection while on the move, as well as for covering the flanks and rear once the LMG is in position. The payoff is that once you are set up, you completely dominate your chosen fire sector, which lets your teammates to move in better positions and so on.

Like Canebrake said, there's nothing realistic about a LMG jamming in a game due to overheating.

Here's a regular assault rifle firing 300 rounds, something it's fully capable of by design (although it's a safe bet that the weapon's accuracy is permanently affected at the point where even its handguard catches fire).

For a LMG, 300 rounds is more of an appetizer than a challenge. They are machines designed to keep on churning out bullets without interruption.
QFT.

As long as you're not trying to be totally realistic, then you're find without over heating or any of the above. COD has a lot of realism issues. I'd love to see any soldier knife that effectively IRL. Insta-death every swipe my ass.

This video is relevant to this thread:

I'm for it if the machine gun has infinite ammo. Against if you need to reload it.

I agree it is annoying but it's more realistic than mowing down hordes effortlessly and laughing as the gun starts to melt away in your hands and keep firing.

It always depends what sort of game it is, if it's trying to be realistic I'm all for it. In Team Fortress 2 for instance it just wouldn't work if the Heavy's minigun overheated.

When you mention a gameplay mechanic like this I'm gonna have to bring up Red Orchestra. Firing an LMG non-stop would cause the barrel to overheat and you'd lose accuracy dramatically until you'd eventually have to change the barrel to continue using it. It really encourages you to be conservative and fire in bursts which is perfect for a game like RO... this brings me back to the point that it all depends on the game.
It would work in TF2 with really high tolerance to heat. Means you can't just spam the gun beside a dispenser. Also, "Sasha is not well!"

I like games for escapism from the real world. In the real world, guns overheat. In games, I can fire away for a year and my gun will be as new.

It depends on the focus of the game - if it's on high speed action with a hint of realism (call of duty is an excellent example) then adding overheating is somewhat necessary for the sake of "balance" in that it forces you to stop firing every so often like anyone with a smaller magazine might have to. If the focus is on pure realism then overheating needs to be included along with a more reasonable heat up time, rate of fire and accuracy. Yes, an M249 can spit 800+ RPM at it's max cycle rate but you can only reliably deliver about 200 RPM for sustained periods without having to resort to regular barrel swaps. If the focus is purely on the action then overheating is out of place and provides an unnecessary break in flow.

i am against Over heating because it is so blatently unrealistic and only in games in a meager attempt to 'balance' the weapon sets in the game. you can go through 2 full belts worth of ammunition in constant fire on almost every machine gun out there before you are forced to stop firing the gun due to heat.

i wish they would implement a Realistic over heating in a game... IE, as the barrel gets hotter, it starts to warp with each shot making it less accurate. if you over heat your gun, it doesn't stop working, it just stops being effective.

and i personally think it would be more balanced than what we see in game at the moment. nubs want to spray with the M60, by all means. in about half a belt you're not going to be able to hit squat
