Played in High school but kinda grew out of it by senior year. It was fun but not really for me any more.

I used to play it back when I was in college but keeping up with all the expansion packs gave way to paying rent. I dusted off the cards a few years ago and taught my wife to play. It was fun for a while. I do like the game. As an aside, I knew a guy that had a job writing manuals/expansion books for DnD (or one of those roleplaying systems). When MTG got popular, everyone stopped buying the books and he lost his job. He's not too fond of MTG.

Until M10 happened.
Pardon my ignorance, but as someone who's only been playing for around five months, what exactly did M10 change that was so bad?
For me, it took a lot of the flavor away. I know many people whine about Mogg Fanatic being redefined, but let's be honest, it was a beloved broken card. Balance is broken now.

I remember when 1G meant a 2/2 vanilla bears. Now GG means a 3/2 Trample, no drawbacks. Jackal Pup was considered to be severely overpowered, but now it would be considered a moderately strong, but not broken card. But back in that day UU meant Counterspell, which was thought to be overpowered, so they scaled it back to 1UU as Cancel. Creatures ramped up, and spells didn't maintain the same growth.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that the way the game has been shaped in the last few years, especially with M10 is that it is dominated by creatures, and guys like me who loved spell decks that only had creatures for blocking, or crazy abilities, and winning somehow other than "Swing for massive damage" aren't getting any love.

I do not currently play anymore or keep up. I still have my main deck ready to go, but it stopped being updated after Mirrodin. However I could always potentially get back into it.
The latest set is actually a reprise of Mirrodin.
It's a Mirrodin Phyrexia crossover thing.
That's how my friends got me back in...
I am just marking my departure from the game. My main reason for not playing is that the only people I played with was my dad, his friends, and my brother. If I made friends that played, Id likely get back into it.

It's an awesome game. I wish me and my friends played it more often. (And that it didn't cost $8,000 for a decent deck....)

I want to play... but I don't have the cash for starting out and no idea on the different deck builds, card editions and entire game versions (I heard something about there being a version called generals among other things). I heard poison based builds were alright.

I enjoy playing it, but I play it too infrequently to justify th fuckton of money I spent building my decks.

About as nerdy as chess. Magic is strategic, and a whole lot more strategic that chess will ever be. It's also very, very fun (and very very expensive). I enjoy it as much as the next bloke, and I disagree that it's nerdy. Nerds play it a lot though, because other people would not normally try it out of fear of being called a nerd.
AHHHHHhhhhh

Don't ever, ever, compare it to chess. Please. Chess is close to perfect, Magic is full of flaws.

Don't get me wrong, I love Magic but it's bloody chess.

Anyway, option #5- it's impossible to compete in any constructed format without shelling out hundreds of dollars. I'll stick to drafting and cubing.

Which is funny, because old school spells tend to still trump newer school creatures.

People whine when I start throwing around splinters and exiles, then last word their counters.

I really enjoyed playing it when I was younger for three reasons:

1) I had a lot more free time

2) So did my friends

3) I spent more money on entertainment (in proportion to my income)

I did find that I didn't like to play with many people though. I preferred a few close friends who, like me, played for fun and weren't utra competitive. We also tended to play in waves. So when a new set was out we would buy a box between us and randomly dole out the cards into equal piles. We would do this about once a year when we got the urge to so there wasn't a real rhyme or reason to which set we picked - whatever was new at the time really.

Been playing for about two years now and have a great group to play with on fridays, I personally enjoy trying to build something no one else is doing and making it work.

yeah, I usually tried to find an unconventional card and build a deck around it. Often didn't fare too well against my mates (one was obsessed with Blue control-style decks and the other researched online what were the most powerful cards in a given set - he was the worst to play against).

I saw a thread about Yu-Gi-Oh!, and now I gotta ask: what's everyone's opinion of Magic?
I'm not ashamed to say I play it, and neither are my friends. We're all in college and think it's quite the game. I personally think it has a very deep strategic potential, and I really like that. And since I've discovered proxies, it isn't even that expensive of a hobby anymore.
When I tell people I play MTG, I get one of three responses: what's that, you're a geek, or so do I! So, I thought it was about time to see what the wonderful people of the Escapist have to say about it. Poll time!
I'm a big fan of kitchen table play. Magic is a solid part of my saturday nights.

Also. How many proxies are you running? No one wants to play against a hobo deck.

I miss apprentice online. Damn Magic Online had to go and ruin what was a good time, I've recently started playing again. Man I love this game, despite my anger at the fast pace of set releases I still love being able to pull down the perfect ass beating combo.

A friend of mine made me play for a while, mainly while passing the time like when waiting for a bus. I got 2 starter packs for free, but I was never really hooked on it. Just not my thing.
