Ok, so I think it's pretty clear that Ocarina of Time is a good game. How good is debatable, but I believe it is a truly amazing game. Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask was released as a sequel (sort of) to Ocarina of Time, and despite getting good reviews, it scored a fair bit lower than OoT. The reason I'm starting this thread is to get people's opinions on the difference between the to games.

Honestly, I believe that MM was better than OoT. Ok, shoot me, flame me, kill me, but I think that it was dramatically more fun. I think MM had a much more dark and intriguing storyline, and the land of Termina was, in my mind, much more immersive than Hyrule. The masks were a great edition, and the time mechanic in the game added not only a sense of strategy, but a sense of loyalty and urgency. It made you really sympathise with Termina, and gave you the same worried feel that link would've got, as each day passed by and the moon visibly drew closer. The side quests also added heaps of replay value, and just made the game feel so deep, much deeper than Oot.

So what does everyone else on the Escapist reckon? Was OoT better than MM? Dramatically? Or Vice Versa? Perhaps they were equal. I'm really interested to hear peoples opinions. Please realise, you can simply sit on the fence and vouch for both sides.

Hard to say, they had a very different atmosphere to be honest, although the fairy was much less annoying than Navi!
I personally prefered OoT to MM, but I didnt think it was a bad game at all, I think OoT 'felt' more epic, whereas MM was a darker title, so a slightly different 'flavour', its like trying to explain whether I prefer Chocolate or Toffee Ice Cream, I like both, Chocolate is more my thing, but they're both awesome.

That said because of N64 prices and people refusing to discount the carts, MM was sadly missed by many gamers I think.

I think they are pretty equal, I personally give a tiny tiny lead to MM, I just thought the end fight if you collected each and every mask in the game and transformed into the ultimate hero was truly epic.

Personally, I love both of them. I picked Majora's Mask in the poll because I enjoyed the concept behind it more but they are almost equal.

Now to go find my old copies of them and dig up the N64!

Hehe, I made this topic some time ago too. Was actually quite succesfull! I believe Majora's Mask won, in that one.

Anyway, OT: I think Majora's Mask is the better game! Why? Because it has a darker atmosphere, I didn't mind the time-limit, I liked how the masks had different uses, but most importantly; every character in the game had a story to tell and something to do, during those 3 days. They weren't just mindless NPC's. Figuring out their schedules, stories and agendas was a thrill.

I even made this, to honour one of my favourite games of all time, so uhm, watch at your own peril:

[EDIT] Here's the result of my poll, made roughly 3-4 months ago:

Ocarina of Time
44.1% (26)

Majora's Mask
55.9% (33)

Posting it, since I'm interested in seeing whether or not yours will achieve the same result :)

I prefer Majoras Mask, purely because it plays across the same 3 days and has the most mind blowing teleportation stuff.

Ocarina of time is better. It had more story, you had to explore 2 timelines and it had more dungeons. But they were both equally fun.

Naughty, albeit thought out, VS thread!.

[small]tut, tut[/small]

OT: I am going to go with OOT since I like it's abbreviated form more.

OOT > MM

True story!

It also seems like there's a big influx of Zelda threads.

OoT for me was a more light hearted and linear title than MM, I enjoyed both of then thoroughly, but MM gets it in the end for me, everything in it felt like a real achievement, discovering all the daily runnings of clock town, discovering how to get the guilded sword etc. etc. OoT was sort of , main quest, oh look new area and side quests are unlocked because of this new item. MM was more darker and indirect, which at times racked your brains but in the end you felt good for linking a few straggled ends together to get you a new mask.

I think the best way to put it would be....

OoT was more "Epic Scale"

MM was more "That is genius"

yeah im gonna have to sit on the fence with this one, they are both incredible games for their time.

But when comparing them I did like the story from OoT better but the gameplay and the levels in MM were fantastic.

Don't get me wrong the Gameplay and the depth of the levels in OoT were fantastic.

Unfortunately I have never played Majora's Mask, but I loved Ocarina of Time, so I will probably buy Majora's Mask one of these days.

Probably because Zelda games have been around since the late 80's, have generally usually been very good, and arguably have a larger following than almost any other Nintendo series with the exception of Mario, and PERHAPS Pokemon.

For their time? what lets them down in this time? graphics? Who cares? These days I'd rather a new 8 bit game with a great story than something my eyes want to marry and no more depth or "personality" than a brick.

I think honestly they're both games with their good and bad points, however MM loses out if only for the fact that it was so bloody HARD! I completed OoT at quite a young age (with the help of an older cousin and a strategy guide, mind you) but I couldn't figure out how to get through MM until I was about 15.
