Superman Returns. It was kinda boring but at least it wasn't awful and had Superman actually act like a hero, not just have him be in the right place at the right time like in Man of Steel.

I have always found Superman to be fairly boring but Man of Steel really kept me entertained. The fight scenes were the best I've seen in a super hero movie. I was neutral about Superman Returns until they gave the kid super powers, which just made me cringe. Really glad they didn't continue with that. Clark's dad was an idiot and the tornado scene was laughably bad, but those were the only parts I didn't like. If I was a Superman fan, I can imagine Man of Steel putting me off a bit but as someone who doesn't care about comics and was just watching this as a sort of sci-fi action movie, I would thoroughly entertained

Neither.

I don't see the appeal of Superman in general given how much of a Marty Stu he is.

I'm not a superman fan. I just thought that move failed as an island. There was just no reason for me to care about what was happening.

Man of Steel had better fights and flying.

Superman Returns had better characters and Superman.

Superman Returns might've been a remake of the first film (or at least it's plot) all over again, but it was a good Superman film. Lois Lane was a not cast well, her hubby was a dork, but apart from that I think it was just fine. I enjoyed it, thought Spacey was great, thought Brandon Routhe was great and it was an enjoyable Superman film.

Man of Steel was made to be 3D extravaganza. Zod was about the only remotely interesting thing about the film. It was gritty and dark and looked awful. It was a non-stop shitty action sequence of building after building getting knocked down. Almost all the casting was awful. Superman didn't need a reboot, they could've just gotten on and given us a Superman film, instead a fucking origin story because there aren't enough of those. I bought the Superman Returns DVD. I will not be buying MoS on DVD.

I'm gonna say Man of Steel. While Superman Returns has some merits like the plane crash scene or the scene where he is just saving Metropolis most of the movie is a snore. Also the plot of the land thing and Superman's kid. Just kind of out of nowhere and stupid. Though its characterization of Superman was a very good one.

However that being said it was held back, and Bryan Singer admits it, that it was a continuation of the Donner films. I think meant to over right superman 3 and 4. Either way he was working from that template so it was one of those weird sequel/reboots that occur every now and then and brought down the film

Now Man of Steel I won't say its perfect. Its not. However despite people complaining about all the origin stories there are some you have to tell. Batman's you don't have to tell anymore. Not after Nolan. All 5 Superman films before Man of Steel were more or less the same universe. The same story thread and since people's last good outing with Superman was The animated series he needed his retold. It needed to be defined as its own entity unrelated to the Donner films or Returns. The design of the film was pretty damn good. Faora Ul and Zod were memorable. Especially Faora (those eyes *drools*) um sorry. I felt it laid firm building blocks for Superman going forward. While it was kind of clunkily handled the neck breaking scene I though was actually pretty ballsy. Also before anyone says anything about Superman not killing he killed Zod in the second movie and hell EVEN BATMAN KILLED SOMEONE IN THE DARK KNIGHT. TWO FACE ANYONE? Sorry people seem to over look that when they bring the recent Batman movies into the discussion. I loved Man of Steel. I'm a firm believer if solid building blocks are laid that future installments can make the previous ones even better. The prequels for Star Wars were good. The Clone Wars series (both of them) actually added to the movies and made them even better than they already were......any opinion I have on anything has just been discredited hasn't it?

I'm cautious about MOS 2 because of the characters I keep hearing rumors about. If they limit Wonder Woman to a Black Widow style role like in Iron Man 2 I think it'll be fine. A pretty solid cast for that movie over all. I mean Gal Godot is a solid action girl if she's been a mainstay of Fast and Furious. Who knows maybe she's just waiting for the role to show her chops. We've been surprised by actors and actresses many times before so I'm optimistic about it. Heath Ledger, Michael Keaton anyone?

Man Of Steel is a terrible Superman movie.
Superman Returns is a decent Superman movie.

Man Of Steel is a better movie in general. *shrug*

The correct answer is neither.

They should get Paul Dini and Bruce Timm to make a Superman movie and just be done with this endless string of failures.
But noooo, hiring the two guys who could absolutely NAIL IT is just to complicated for DC/WB.

For me, this is the appeal:
He's a lion who desperately wants to be a house cat. He just wants to fit in and be loved by his family. Every move he makes is done with surgical precision and extreme care to not accidentally cause an effortless catastrophe. Every reflex of his has the potential for mayhem.

For me, that's the appeal.
Granted, that's an almost impossible thing to constantly tell a story around, so it's a mostly forgotten element of the character.
