I CAN drive both, but I use the automatic due to the car I have right now.

Huh. Based on my experience in real life, I would expect far less people to be able to drive manual.

Anyhoo, I learned to drive on a manual, and I'd prefer a stick in almost any situation, the one exception being stop-and-go traffic, in which case I would most definitely prefer an automatic.

I can drive a manual, but I'd simply prefer to drive an auto.

So, license says I can drive a manual, preference (and several years of not driving manual) says my car is auto.

Also, CVT is nice. Honda Civic hybrid - they're an awesome car.

Yeah, I only drive stick because I got a good deal on my second car and it was a stick. Otherwise I would never have learned. And now I prefer stick.
It is true that fewer and fewer people in the US drive stick now or even know how.

Manuals are amazing . . . automatics are so boring to drive . . . however I don't like my dads acura (really hard to shift gears), but love the VWs so easy and fun!

This is really wierd... I was thinking about starting a thread about manual versus automatic yesterday... I was also thinking about saying manual versus stickshift as a trick. See if people were on their toes.

That's strange, I was under the impression that literally no-one drove manual in the US.

All the people I know either can, or want to learn. I think more people in the dense cityscape would not know how to drive standard. When I was in my teens, stick shift cars were the thing to have, so most people knew how to drive them.

My parents taught me on a 99 Jeep Wrangler. If you can drive that without giving people whiplash, you can drive anything.

I suppose that's one more stroke on the 'US films/media have ruined the non-US interpretation of the US' list. In literally every medium that I've seen, everyone bar 'silly elitists' always drive an automatic and it seems to be the standard joke in films/tv that a character lends another character 'their precious stick car' which is subsequently ruined.

at times Im lazy and like auto... BUT Manual is actually better for where I live, being mountain, and hilly.. it allows me much much much better control on ice, and other bad driving conditions that an automatic can't really notice, and thus not give the best gear for that task " even the newer ones"

so my Rav4 is manual
My supra is manual
my corolla is automatic

Manual here, but I get a choice in my car.

If I am in lazy mode I select auto and let the car do the shifting for me. If I am hauling ass then I stick it in manual and use the paddle shifters to change gear. Love the paddle shift and the DSG gearbox.

Doesn't mean they aren't fun :)
You want a FUN manual car...

Early 90's Pontiac Firefly. It's like having a manual transmission go-kart. The damn things handle so well, and pack quite a lot of punch in the 5-speed. Crappy top-end speed and the car won't last ten years, but fun. Used to have one on the car lot I worked for long ago, always bombed around with it, pulling doughnuts in the snow, etc...
Wow that sounds amazing. I really haven't driven that many manual cars, and never a really good sports car . . . someday :)
