Yeaaaah I can't wait, I love the crazyness of it all with people going ape shit over it. The chance to win is good and since I don't care for sport this is the most competitive thing I like

Also go team Valve
valve is not going to win do not get your hopes up
I know, it will probably be Zynga, Turbine or Bioware but I can hope

I completely hate it.

Last time I checked, versus threads almost always got locked here.

So then the staff turns around and blatantly does a site-sponsered fanboy versus thread. All it is is a reversal of what the staff say isn't acceptable and purposefully make this...... thing to make flaming, ranting, hating, all that stuff all the easier. Just for some extra traffic.

Didn't participate last year, not going to ever again. Once was PLENTY.
I think you make a good point. March Mayhem, from a practical standpoint, is little more than a site-sponsored flamewar (or "versus thread," although the only difference between the two is the level of civility, really) for the purpose of aiding The Escapist's bottom line (ad revenue, more people watching videos etc).

They themselves start something that they'd mod users for doing, then say, "don't say anything bad about anyone else's opinion or we'll mod you without mercy," despite it being their fault that people are even debating the issue of Zynga vs Nintendo or whatever. I mean, it wouldn't be a freaking issue if you guys didn't introduce the competitive contest and try to rile people up!

My point is, the level of maturity around here drops way off every year around MM time. I've seen MM twice myself, and it was terrible both times. That said, it's a huge promotional campaign for the website, so they won't be getting rid of it anytime soon. After all, they are a business.

yeah valve sucks
See, this is what I'm talking about. During MM at least, you might get modded for outright saying this. But the only reason you're even TALKING about Valve right now, is because of March Mayhem!

Having been here through three (I think) March Mayhems, I can say that I am both excited and apprehensive. Its a great concept that brings lots of traffic and great new people to the Escapist, but it also brings out a lot of hostility among people. I'd be lying if I said I haven't been rip-shit pissed about the results in past years.

Turbine got a lot of hate in the past for actively encouraging its gamers to come over and vote via their game launchers (a legitimate and fair strategy in my mind). I'm pretty neutral on them, as I haven't played any of their games.

Zynga got crazy hate last year (I'd be lying if I said I didn't rage at them winning every round) when it did a similar thing, but it was mostly because of the 'casual' focus of their games and some of the shady business practices by their execs that normal gamers were against. Lots of flames, it was messy.

This year is interesting though. There are some new developers out there so we will see what happens. I'm personally bummed that Mohjang got matched up with Nintendo in the first round. Nothing against Nintendo, but I'd like to see Minecraft get at least a couple rounds in :(

I think it's safe to say I am the only person who entered this thread expecting a discussion about the real March Madness, you know, NCAA basketball.

Ya, they will. They dominated half the league without breaking so much as a sweat and easily did the impossible by beating Zynga by a margin of 5,000 votes (2,000 regular votes and a truck load of tweet votes). Now, voting for Zynga isn't gonna be as simple as last years and Turbine died out very quickly (You saw them last year. They didn't even make it past the 2nd seed against Square Enix) It will be a Valve vs Bioware match up in the end. Just as it was last year and just as it will be next year.

I'm going to welcome it with open arms, I've noticed no significant change since last MM and wonder what the fuck people get so up in arms about. I love March Mayhem, without it I wouldn't even be here.

I'm fairly interested in this March Mayhem thing. I didn't participate in last year's but I'm jumping right into the fray this time around.

from what I heard it opened a flood gate full of Zynga fans and /b/ stepped in to make sure they wouldn't win.
/b/ certainly "stepped in", but it was mostly with gore, porn, and everything else that comes with incurring the wrath of nobody's personal army.

I loved the drama/epic win of last year's MM, so I'm back again for this one.

While the forums were quickly overrun with flame wars and banned posts, I enjoyed the passionate debates for or against certain devs, the calling-to-arms of each faction's respective home forums, the neck-and-neck races between two deserving devs, and the <a href=http://www.lolblog.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/epicwin1.jpg>EPIC WIN demonstrated last time.

I thought it was a personal hit-parade.
So Square-Enix is on the top of my list, beating Capcom by a gunblade.
But my brackets are based on past memories of the PS2 era, rather than the new times.

I interested this year since this is the first time I partake in it (also I really want that Laptop! Although Lady Luck doesn't favour me a lot...)

I'm annoyed that the score-image is displayed below everyones name and avatar on the left side of a thread, regardless of if that member is even participating in the event. And there (i think) is no way to disable it. This isn't something optional anymore - its blatantly advertising it, by punching people in the face with it, a dozen times per thread-view. If this continues, i'll simply remove it myself.

I like the aspect of trying to predict brackets like a sports fan.

Mine heavily bases on Valve putting up information about the event on Steam.

And threads... Well I just will try to avoid them.

This is my first MM, but it seems like an interesting concept, and I am pretty excited for it. But I failed my bracket, I didn't realize it was a tipping thing not a voting thing.
As for my favourites... I know this is a long shot but go Mojang! :3

I'm actually quite excited, last 2 years have been entertainning and full of drama.

Last 2 march madness have had their ups and downs, and twists that no one saw coming which made the whole thing really watchable as opposed to it just being valve/bioware roflstomping everything in their path (well that happened too, but it was almost like a minor footnote compared to everything else going on)
Besides zynga's drama from last year and the turbine drama from the year before, there's also things going on like relic beating blizzard in a popularity contest (angels were singing when that happened)... Seriously, march madness is great so long as you don't get too caught up in it and invest yourself emotionally in the proceedings by taking it personally when your fav dev loses to a dev it should have beaten (in the beholder's opinion).

Btw in my humble opinion the problem lies less with people from outside the site causing crap and more the attitude of people on this site when things don't go the way they thought it would go.
Course trolls are drawn like moths to a flame as this competition is ripe with trolling opportunities, but the worst comes from normal users who take things a bit too seriously....

Fun fact: I was told I wasn't welcome and I should "please" leave this site as it isn't "for people like me" during last march madness.
This was followed of course by a "lost faith in humanity" rant.

My crime? Merely saying zynga fans have a right to vote for devs they support even if we don't agree with them. I got a few other responses but this one always stuck with me due to its lack of passive agressiveness (a rarity), seemed more like genuine pleading to me.
So yeah, you can't really say the negative attitude is entirely from people outside the site ;)

Well I'm looking foward to it, I'm not touching the " I HATE XXX" threads.

We know some of winners at the start will be very wtf because of troll voting and shit.
