A number of factors contribute as to why more people bought and played the much loved Mass Effect 2 than the original. Though i loved them both the first is definitely my favourite. While it's sequel is amazing i was somewhat put off by the 'dumbed-down' leveling and customization, not to mention that sorry excuse for ammo. 'Heat clips?'. Seriously?

Anyway, all that aside it seems im in the minority so i want to know which game do you guys prefer?

*NOTE* Only vote if you have actually played BOTH games and not just the interactive comic iteration of the first!

Mass Effect 1.

Of course, I actually liked Mass Effect 2 better, but since they changed the over the shoulder camera perspective, playing ME2 makes me want to puke.

I personally enjoyed the first one more, it felt it had more content in terms of places to explore and felt less linear and more tactical. Also I found Shepherd was much better character when he was the first human spectre than the guy who saved the galaxy. I enjoyed the combat more which was less waiting for people to pop their heads up and boom!

Also that's kinda of a dick move to PS3 users by not letting them vote, which they will. They can at least talk about what they enjoyed about the second. I'm sure they got a good idea of the story and they could compare them.

I can't decide so I'll take the immature way out and say Mass Effect 2 because of Miranda's breasts.

I didn't care for the dumbing down of the customization either. ME1 was far better IMO (although ME2 had far superior scenery and interesting places)

The first one, hands down.

The only thing I liked better about ME2 was the lack of Mako.

Two was better in my opinion. The story was more engrossing. ME1 felt more of a "hurry up and get to the end" affair to me personally. So much so I didnt even realize there were romantic encounters in the game till I was already finished with it.

Two... without the plot, your just running around in corridors shooting at things. If I wanted that theres plenty of better alternatives.

Can't say one of them was lesser than the other for me, because the most important thing for me in Mass Effect is the story and it's the same (enjoyable) story told throughout the two games. From a more technical (gameplay) standpoint, while both had their annoyances, after balancing them out a bit I think I'd go with Mass Effect 1 for various reasons, mostly to do with my feel of immersion. Nitpicks, really.

I preferred 1 for it's deeper mechanics, with combat and especially inventory. Sure it was complicated but two took it too far in simplifying it, I just didn't give me a feeling of advancement. I'm also one of those people who liked having the Mako sections.

Mass Effect 2 was without a doubt the better one from a pure gameplay perspective.
But ME1 had a better plot, with all the technology well explained and such. Thanks to the exploring of random planets the world also felt a lot bigger.
I honestly can't pick a favourite though.

Mass Effect 2.

Useless, fiddly inventory? Gone.
Boring vehicle sections? Gone.
Meaningless stats? Reduced.
Corny dialogue? Mostly gone.
Combat? Improved. A lot.
Characters? More and mostly better.

The only things it really lacked were Wrex and Liara. And they fixed one of those with the Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC.

Granted, ME2's position in the middle of a trilogy caused it to suffer a bit in the plot department. It didn't get to introduce the setting because ME1 took care of that, and it didn't get to conclude the whole Reaper business because that's ME3's job. The Collectors were a bit of a cop-out in that regard. But it made up for that, and then some.

Don't get me wrong, I loved ME1 in spite of its flaws. But, in my eyes, ME2 was an improvement in nearly every way.

Now bring on the Mass Effect 3!

And now I'm gonna bail before this thread descends into inevitable unpleasantness. I don't think I could tolerate another three rounds with the RPG crowd.

Mass Effect 2. I did miss the greater variety for stat growth, and the more choices for customization, but the overall interface and control scheme was greatly improved allowing the game to run much more smoothly. It's nearly impossible for me to go back and play ME1 now. I just can't be re-convinced that I'm having fun struggling with the controls now that I know I have another option.

Mass Effect 1

I liked having so many options for what I wanted in a gun, and Mass Effect 2 feels a lot more linear. Also, taking the Mako down to a planet may have gotten old, but at least it was gameplay, unlike ME2's "hold stick left for ten minutes to scan planet" resource collection.

I second this.

The first game has a better plot, but the gameplay was so amazingly boring that I just rushed through those parts so i could get to the talky talky, decision making parts.

I've played through ME 2 a lot more than the first, simply because everything about the game is better (except the plot), the character interactions were better, the weapons were better (I couldn't give a toss about mods that increase the size of my gun's barrel circumference by 1%) and the game was just overall a lot funner to play.

Mass Effect 2 by a slim margin. It would be a huge margin if they didn't pull the ammo and genophage retcons, but still more streamlined.

That said, I LOVE both games and think of them as Bioware's greatest works ever.

This. I didn't care that you no longer had to loot your enemies, i mean after all, you can advance your character in terms of items by either killing the enemy, finding items or unlocking "chests".

So really, no loss in terms of item progression (which is really what looting is about).

It's nothing personal. We're comparing the actual games as a whole not just the story.

I was originally going to write a long post on why 2 is better but i guess i'll just say that the gameplay was streamlined, the story wasn't as good but the characters were far more interesting and the scenery was beautiful and memorable for nearly every mission.
