So I've had an Xbox for close to a year now, but only recently have I started to buy actual games instead of renting them (money issues). And I have decided to buy the epic Bioware masterpiece (or so i heard), Mass effect.

Problem is, I dont which to buy first.

I'd rather get Mass Effect 2, but is number one worth it, story-wise? I heard that the choices you make in 1 carry on to 2, so I'd love to do that, but number 2 seems, I dont know, better.

TL;DR: Should I get number 1 or 2? Story-wise and gameplay-wise.

I'd go with one because it's funner then the second. You can actually go down on planets and it gives you some feel of actual freedom where 2 is cramped and very linear.

one starts off a bit slow and is a little hard to get into, but once i get going that game is so hard for me to put down.

then again..mass effect 2 is awesome, the only thing i didn't like about 2 was that they took away the weapon customization and whatnot (even though the first ones menu was tedious as shit)

OT: get one first, once you beast thru that till the end, get 2

The first one, obviously. If you've never played the first game why play the second? Also, the first one is 10x better.

Awesome, thanks for all the feedback, totally getting it tomorrow.

Also, any tips for a new player who has never, and I mean nNEVER, played a Bioware game?

The combat was far better in my opinion in the first one. Thermal clips was a horrible addition, and I liked having more control over my weapons.

Get the first one, so you actually understand the story that happens in the second. I'm going to assume that you can eventually get the second (The first one was $9.99 when I bought it recently).

ME2 is a better game, but ME1 is still great. That said, however, ME2 is such a huge improvement that you will never be able to go back to the first one. In sum: play the first one first. You'll love it, and you'll be ready for the even-better sequel.

You'll want the first one, so you can actually decide what you want to happen in Masseffect 2. Having played a preset character, it really sucked having to deal with decsions I'd have never made, espically when they do affect some key points in the game.

They are both under $40 now so get them both if you can.
If you can't then you should get the first one first.
Mass Effect is a story driven game so you should go in order of the story.

You kinda have to play the first...

It's a shame because it's insanely boring, whilst the second is incredibly fun.

in my opinion...

mass effect 1 had a better story, longer gameplay, and was fun and enjoyable most of the way with some boring parts as a result to a better story

mass effect 2 had a sluggish story, shorter period of game time but had a much better battle system then mass effect 1 and seemed more lively then mass effect 1 which can make you play it over and over again (i've done it about 7-12 times)

i'd get mass effect 1, mass effect 2 is generally better then mass effect 1 but it has to many empty holes if you haven't played the first and care about the story + its cheaper

Mass Effect 2 is better than the original in every way; the combat is more fluid, the dialog snappier, they've done away with the abysmal inventory screen, the graphics are jaw-dropping and the characters are more engaging. The only thing that could have improved it, that was in the original, was some inclusion of the Mako.

That said, if you are new to the franchise and you don't start with Mass Effect you are really robbing yourself of the full experience.

The correct answer to the poll is YES.

Why not ask a loving mother which of her children she likes better? Love them both the same, don't try to separate them.
