Poll: Mass Effect 1: Should I rescue Kaidan or Ashley?

You know the Virmire mission near the end of the first Mass Effect where you have to choose whether to save Kaidan and let Ashley die, or vice-versa? This is my second time playing through, since I lost my first save file, and I'm in a bit of a conundrum over who to save.
Kaidan is totally useless in a fight (I'm a Soldier class) but he's a cool guy.
Ashley, on the other hand, is much better in a fight, but a total *****. I don't like her at all.
Some background info that may or may not help--I've played ME2. I'm hooking up with Liara in ME1. I don't really command my squad to do anything during a fight. I let them handle themselves while I kick ass, take names, and chew gum. Too bad gum isn't included in standard Alliance rations.

EDIT: Ah, one more thing--is there a way to save Wrex from his untimely demise?

to save wrex you need your charm or intimidate insanely high, I don't think you can do it on your first play-through

I prefer Ashley, but if you like Kaidan - keep Kaidan. It only seems logical.

I hate Ashley, don't know why. Kaidan was meh, but I liked him more as a person that Williams so I'd say Kaidan. And don't kill Wrex you mean son of a Gun.

I'm gonna vote for letting Ashley die. Why? Because, if you're a soldier, Ashley is just another clone of you. Why dilute the awesome?

I saved Kaidan for 3 reasons:
1) I was a soldier class, so Ashley had no abilities I couldn't already use myself, and Kaidan is actually underrated as a biotic imo.
2) I found Kaidan to be a far more interesting and likable character.
3) I was gonna bang Liara anyway.

I made choice based on my Shepards class:
When I played as Infiltrator, I saved Kaidan, and when I played as Sentinel and Vanguard, I saved Ash.

Well, all of Bioware's human teammates suck, and ME1 was no exception. Kaiden just sucks less. He has next to zero personality, and Ashley has a terrible one. Plus they're apparently making her look like a bimbo in 3.

I hated Kaidan. He was so boring and had a vibe of the Carth syndrome. Ugh. The choice was rather easy. That being said, I didn't like Ashley much, either, but she was a good fighter.
