That's just what I played as. I tried playing as other classes but they weren't as fun to me.

The vanguard is actually counter-intuitively cautious... if you just charge wildly you WILL die. I also like cautious play and I found the vanguard to be quite fun. You need to have a plan of who your going to kill, and how and where your going to get cover from before you die so you can make a new plan of who to kill next. Plus you still get some biotic powers which are great for getting stuff out of cover so you can kill them from range if there's no way of getting close without dying.

The vanguard is nearly unstoppable in mass effect 1 and really fun in 2
Also it will take some practice getting used to it, expect to die at first.

Other than that... the infiltrator is pretty fun too.

Infiltrator it is.

I was going to suggest Manguard until you said you liked to play cautiously. Seriously, it's a great class, arguably the best class in the game, but it requires more of a high risk/high reward affiliation.

If you plan on playing on anything above normal mode then avoid the Adept like the plague. Throw, Lift, Singularity etc, only effect enemies that have no protection (armour, shields, barriers). Since pretty much every enemy has some form of protection on higher difficulties, it makes playing an Adept a pain in the arse.
Did Insanity with my Adept
Then you must love being completely useless until you've managed to whittle down their shields/barrier/armour with a shitty SMG. Warp is really the only thing you can use until then.
LMAO I wouldn't go that far, first remember I had bonuses and additional training in heavy weapons, because of the previous two or three gameplays.

And secondly since I learned the hard way on hardcore that the few melee battle namely the husk battles were goddamn horrible and tossing their asses skyward with Shockwave was gratifying as an Adept, also Singlarity proved useful with pulling in enemies, and Stasis was always useful as well.

The Shepard I have taken through the series is now a Vanguard, and I think will stay one.

I voted Soldier for the following reasons:

If you don't want to get in close, you don't want to play a Vanguard, since that is their forte.
If you already played an Adept, you know how awesome they are, and thus don't need me to tell you that. If you didn't finish as an Adept, then there must be a reason why.
I've never played as an Engineer or Sentinel so I have no idea how good they are and can't judge.

On Soldier, though, you can Snipe when possible, and use the Assault Rifle when not possible. I loved Sniping in ME1, but it was often not possible in ME2. I suppose turning invisible as a Infiltrator would help, but again you can't rely on the sniper option nearly as much as you did in ME1, and the Soldier can manage the best of both world (sniper and assault).

Anyway, those are my thoughts based on your desired method of play. Although, for the record, the classes are very well balanced and any class can finish the game without too much trouble. That's why different people will swear by all six of the classes as the best - they are all good, if used properly. (note the last phrase there - if used properly)

If you manage a one-hit kill with it on mechs it's quite satisfying seeing their head explode into sparks and spare parts.

I watched my brother playing through a gameplay section as an Infiltrator once and, at least from my view at the time, the cloak seemed kind of pointless since as soon as he uncloaked every enemy automatically knew where he was hiding again.
My second playthrough of the games was as an Infiltrator, and I loved it.

I wouldn't say the cloak is pointless, because I've seen videos of people using it very cleverly; but I will say I almost never used it (even though it would have saved my ass more than once if I did). So you don't need to use it if you don't want to.

The Vanguard is still my favourite class; I love the combination of bionics and a shotgun. But if you're looking for a more cautious style of play, after going with an Adept the first time, then the Infiltrator is the way to go.

Plus, it would mean you've tasted a little bit of everything the game has to offer! (Combat, Bionics, Tech)

The cloak is very useful since it essentially makes any shot that breaks the effect do a shit tonne of extra damage, especially if it's a head shot. on Hardcore mode, I was one-shotting Harbinger collectors with the anti-matter rifle.

As always, the majority likes being the generic badass sniper class. Didn't see that coming...

I prefer sentinel. Combines the unique biotic and tech abilities into something I have just taken a liking to. I found it much easier as a sentinel than a playthrough as a solider, adept and engineer.

well, you could use vanguard, if you can master a charge plus shotgun combo (and i mean using it frequently, it gets some of your shields up) you can clean up rooms really quickly, now mind you at first is hard to master, but after you get the hang of it you can literally wipe entire rooms alone without ever needing your companions
Harbringer: I AM THE...
*charge and shotgun combo*
Shepard: STFU

OT:I chose engineer in ME1 and loved it so I carried the class over with my character. The attack drone is useful for diversions and killing weakened enemies behind cover. Incinerate is good as well as it can turn into a homing missile of death against armour and health

i actually did that more times than what is healthy, the trick is to do it just as he launches those powers that get you out of cover, you fly past them and can deliver a shotgun to the face :D

Well now I feel REALLY dumb for not using it.

I just kept forgetting!

My two favorite classes. I love the Vanguard, and I would agree about the counter-intuitive caution. You have to be very aware of your surroundings. If you charge straight into a group of baddies, chances are you will die. It's just a matter of learning to use it effectively. Once you do get the hang of it though, nothing is more satisfying than this:

If it helps, my normal play-style for games is to play every situation pretty cautiously. Charging in like an outer-space Rambo wannabe is NOT my forte as I'm so blisteringly stupid that I usually end up looking like swiss cheese and having to do that particular section over again.
Don't play a Vanguard. Soldier and Infiltrator are pretty good for cautious play.

Never found a problem in ME2 that couldn't be solved by shooting at it with progressively bigger guns. Soldier ftw!

Infiltrator, I am currently doing my first run with it and it is a great long range class. I personally favor the Vanguard class but that is a up close high risk/reward class.
