Why do you ask impossible questions?

I guess if I was pressed on the matter I'd have to choose the original Star Wars trilogy over Mass Effect, just because I grew up watching Star Wars and have only recently discovered Mass Effect.

Star Wars, of course. It's not even fair to compare the two. I prefer the form over function universe of Star Wars. Is the science sound in our world? No. Does it work there? Hell yes.

Forced to choose between the two, it's not even a contest. Star Wars wins all the way. Mass Effect is great, but Star Wars stomps in flat with culture, history, lore, characters, and quotes.
I pray the day never comes when I am forced to actually choose between one or the other.

Star Wars, hands down. Star Wars captures my imagination in a way Mass Effect hasn't even come close.

Depends a LOT on what you experience in your formative years. For me that was Mass Effect. So nothing can top that. I liked Star Wars though...

Hello Kitty 40,000. Yes it is one of the coolest things you've seen all day.

This isn't a thread about debating which sci-fi universe would win so please understand what the OP wants before posting. It isn't even about any conflict, just about which one you prefer. If you're looking for a flame-war, go somewhere else.

Mass Effect isn't over yet, Star Wars Trilogoy is, the last Mass Effect game could make a huge difference, so no comment until then.

Mass Effect totally. The universe isn't as expanded as SW by a long shot but there feels like a more fully fleshed out universe. SW really only works on the large galactic level. I like Chewy and Han but its in the big scheme of things that really matters, ME has both the large and small scales of story. There are the reapers but there are other matters, financial, personal, political that come into play as well.

I left the Star Wars films with a lot of questions that I don't really think I should have to dive into expanded universe to get into. Primarily why would the entire empire crumble just because the emperor is dead? Don't even get me started on the prequels though, pretty much look up confused Matthew and he has a nice long list of issues.

edit: Also agree with the poster above mine.

Would've said Star Wars 15 years ago. Not factoring in the prequels of course. Star Wars is nothing but a childhood memory now.

I prefer the Mass Effect universe. Probably because I didn't really grow up with Star Wars. Although Mass Effect didn't come around till I was 18 or so when it came out.

I like the races and universe more I think. I also think the firearms are superior. Don't get me wrong I love the light sabres and whatnot. I just prefer the feel of the Mass Effect universe.

Although my favorite is Warhammer 40k.

Buuuu Buuut the force!

Psykers, They shoot psychic fireballs, and lightning and other things that are too horrible to give voice to.

I came to warhammer even later than I did Mass Effect. I don't know maybe it's the emphasis on military I like so much in these two sci/fi universes.

They´re different, I tell you that. Star Wars it´s all about the Greek Mithology features, the good against the evil, the "everyone can be redeemed", the Force anmd Afterlife etc., but Mass Effect 1 and 2 are game, damn good ones, and it´s all about the final lesson that anyone is free to choose their own destiny, but they must consider that there are other people in the world and that they need to be ready to face the consequences of their actions.

Still, I call it a draw, and there are 3 series in the Sci-fi that are in the same level of awnsomeness to me: Mass Effect, Star Wars (the original triology, don´t even make me talk about the new shits that LucasArts pulled up) and the whole Stargate series.

Given that the OP specified only the original trilogy (and I presume the original versions, where Han shot first and no prequel-style Anakin Force ghost), I'm going to have to go with Star Wars. Mass Effect is excellent, but it kind of bothers me how everything's so clean and sterile. One of the things I liked about the original Star Wars trilogy was its "lived in" feel, with ships that had dirt and scuffed paint and equipment with exposed parts. It felt more "real" that way.
