I have had this theory banging around for some time now. I live in Australia and there are over 22 million people living here. If one were to make a program that could hack into the entire population's bank account's and steal just 20 cents from all that have a bank accounts, only once and could never be used or made again, would you care that it was stolen and that some guy has made over $4 million from it?

p.s. Stealing is wrong :(

Yes because if one person does it and gets away with it then more people would start doing it and it would quickly get to me to much. Not to mention it undermines everything everyone works for.

Would I care if someone stole 20 cents from my bank account? Yes. It's not just about the amount of money.

Would I care if someone stole 4 million dollars from an entire populations bank account? Absolutely.

This is a silly 'moral' question.

lol it never was meant to be a deep moral question but I would care if someone did do this but to be honest I wouldn't notice the difference in my bank account

Yes I care, that's my shit and I don't want it stolen, even if it is only something small. I'd give one of my friends pocket change if they were short for a pint or something, but I'd be pretty pissed off if someone took it.

I would care if I noticed, but I only remember the amount in there to the nearest £10, so I'd never notice.

I would certainly notice because I watch my account like a hawk, then I would get paranoid and think "Well it's only 20 cents NOW, but soon it's going to be $200" Then I'd file an identity theft claim.

Point being, I probably wouldn't be aware someone was out to steal only 20 cents from me and think they actually want to steal more.

Then the whole population mass panics and the world explodes...

Edit: Joking aside, I probably wouldn't care if somebody stole 20 cents from me, as long as I knew they were going to do it and that it would never happen again... my credit union steals 50 cents from me every time I use my debit card.

Yes I'd care, that's my money, regardless of how small I would notice it (because being working class in the UK and having to pay rent, bills and food is hard)

I'd also be concerned about the security of my bank and why they can't look after my money properly.

And finally, I'd be pretty pissed and jealous someone made 4 million.

Eh...isn't taking a the fractions of cents from each bank account slicing the salami?

Which is/was a serious crime, a big problem for banks?

I don't mind the loss as such, but doing that is wrong. I play by the rules, I don't see why I should let other people break them.

Yes, in my book it is not the effect of the crime, but the intent of the criminal that is punishable. So yeah, the effect on me personally is negligible, but the criminal just stole a ton of money (as was his intention) so that through illicit means he has come into the possession of other folks hard earned cash that he did not earn. Now, if he's Robin Hood-ing that shit, I'd happily forget about my twenty cents, but if not he's just committed a crime against an entire country for personal gain, and that should be punished.

If someone can successfully steal 20 cents from every bank account in the country wirhout beong caught or traced then they deserve to have it...

... I wouldn't care if thy took it anyways! It's just 20 cents... But seriously, doing that would take quite a program... I doubt it's feasibly possible for a single person to do...

Yes I'd care.

It's not about the small amount of money, or about the millions he made by doing the same to lots of people, it's about the security of my own bank account being compromised.

Would you care if somebody broke into your house at night, but was so quiet nobody heard them and when they sneaked into your room, they touched you so gently you didn't wake up?

It's all a matter of principle. Someone took what was mine, not cool. Also this sounds very similar to Office Space... Cool movie. Still a not cool move.

Isn't this what governments do? Steal a small amount of money from the accounts of everyone in the country? :D

What if that person was ding for a good reason, and then you have to think about the taxs that are wasted on things like war or corruption.

That is a disturbing thought.

OT: Yes I'd fucking care, why should some douche who hacked 22 million bank accounts be allowed to steal that much money from people ? How about 22 million people donate that small amount of money to a charity instead ?? Just goes to show that every little bit does help.
