People laugh at you behind your back and let you down, the only people I can stand are adults and little kids, I live in possesions.
That sounds like High School. Get out of High School and that pretty much goes away.

People should focus on People.
Humans aren't very interesting.
There selfish, xenophobic, irrational and hypocritical.

Focusing on them just makes me more depressed.
You realize you're being hypocritical in your very post, right?

All in all, I agree with Ayn Rand on the subject of materialism. Value is the keystone of civilization, typically represented by money. The desire to obtain it is what causes us to produce value and meaning with our lives
That's about the saddest thing I've heard on the subject. You produce value and meaning from money? That's got to be nothing more then a road to misery. If you don't want anything to do with materialism in the first place, then being "poor" means absolutely nothing to you. The saying in the Tao Te Ching goes, "One whose needs are simple can fulfill them easily." And that's exactly how I look at things. You can only be sad about not having lots of stuff, if you cared about having lots of stuff in the first place.

Also, Ayn Rand is incredibly full of shit. But that's another subject.

As for the poll.. I didn't even know how to answer it since obviously there's no such thing as "winning" at life. And what does "dying anyway" have to do with the subject, I have no idea.
The poll is a bit weird. I picked 'Dies anyways' because I don't think it is possible to win at life. In fact, no goals are worth serious pursuit.

That means I am really just waiting around for death, keeping my brain amused and distracted so that I don't get depressed.

Just because I don't believe in any Eternal objective(s) doesn't mean that I can't have fun with some Ephemeral ones. Journey = Reward.

I hate humans because there immoral not because they hate each other. selfish xenophobia tends to involve a lot of favoring of humans after all.

The hypocrisy is in the rolling around in material comforts instead of doing my best to fix what i can.

Correction: People should focus on individuals. Their friends and family, acquaintances.

In what way?

Well i suppose they'll just be born again anyway so it doesn't really matter, they can suck in the next life or they can get loads of toys in the next life anyway so... who cares.
If by that you mean a strong belief in God means you can be a douchebag in life because Heaven awaits hereafter? The point of life in God is to serve and love one another and enjoy the beauty of creation, not hate or waste.

Money can't buy me happiness, true, but money can buy me food. Absence of food definitely leads to absence of happiness, so I'd say that the absence of money (or at least the absence of a certain minimal amount) can lead to the absence of happiness.

Still, the purely materialist/consumerist approach isn't conducive to happiness either, given that we're social creatures and need social contact as well as food, shelter, and sweet gaming rigs.

I'm a bit curious about how fellow Escapists feel on the subject of Materialism and worth of things as opposed to people and emotions interacting thereof. The world with advertising and simply our joy and talents of playing video gaming evoke a strong connotation of reliance and blind objectivity in my mind, which I think is distressing. People should focus on People.
Your thoughts?
Ah, an interesting topic evidently.
Things are worthless.
It is intellect that is important.
People should focus on people? Perhaps. We should focus on sometihng that will benefit people.
I can't stand when people put so much value on things. "Oh noes, my new car has a tiny invisible scratch on it". Y'know what? WHO CARES? It still works doesn't it? It's just a lump of metal, nothing more. Why did you buy it in the first place if i cost so damn much? It has minor damage, so what. Thoughts are important, intelligence is important, things are not.

If I died with the most toys, it means I had the most toys while I was alive. I like toys so I won, since I had stuff I liked before my demise.

Although the idea of focusing on people would be nice if people were worth the effort. I'll stick with my few good friends and my material posessions.

As someone living in the First World in fair amounts of comfort with my needs met, I can say I am against materialism. It leads to greed, and greed really throws a flashbang into my party. I am fine with the amount of stuff i have, and feel no real need to own anything more for the sake of owning it.

For, fellow Escapists, perhaps we should explain our personal definitions of materialism before discussing it?

Mine for instance, would be the desire to have things for the sake of having them. For example, having a high end guitar because of it's performance and sound quality to better your playing (which would be more utilitarian) as opposed to having a high end guitar because it's shiny and it'll look really cool in your living room.

Materialist insofar as it provides comfort; i.e i don't starve to death outside, in the rain and cold. Once the essentials are cared for, then i care about people. In the long run, possessions are transient, emotional connections can lead to people caring for you, and hence mourning you after you're dead. Objects can't do that.

And, in the end, being able to die while happy, to die while looking back on your life and saying "damn I wish I could do that again" is pretty much winning by any definition I can think of. It's open ended, so you're only competing against yourself. You meet your goals in life, you win.

Me? I don't need to be Bill Gates to be happy. But I'll always want money. I'll always want recognition. I'll always want to be better than I was yesterday, richer than I was yesterday. I will never accept my own decay.

Materialism is when you depend on the things you own to define your self.

Just because I have multiple game systems doesn't mean I'm a materialist. I have them because I enjoy playing video games, but that is not all whom I am.

I like to be comfortable in life and have nice things. The materialism or consumerism part comes when I buy something that has no purpose to me. I once bought a second MP3 player because it looked cool. There was nothing wrong with my other one, but I just decided to spend $200. No need. I couldn't even fill my first MP3 player, why did I need another one?
