Inception was, to me, far more serious. The Matrix was good and all, but it had less gravitas and weight. It dealt with similar themes, but had a slightly more lighthearted tone.

Also, Cillian Murphy's big dramatic scene was touching.

I remember when versus threads were frowned upon...

I choose to not choose between them. I love Inception and I really, really like the Matrix as reality altering worlds.

I like them both, but for different reasons. The Matrix is a solid action movie and I will always be thankful to it for turning Hollywood away from confusing close up fist fights in action movies, but those Alice in Wonderland references... really? Maybe they did it before it was cliche, but I can't get over it when I rewatch it now.

I think Inception is stronger over all. The action is good, and without ripping off the Matrix, and it's an interesting exercise in analysis. I just LOVE the bit at the end with the top. People end up getting too caught up in plot details about the various levels, wondering whether or not he finally made it out, when it's telling you NOT to obsess in the end.

I liked the Matrix movie, but Inception had better actors.
I guess it is not fair to judge on the story when Matrix was out long before Inception...

The only problem is when I think of the Matrix I can't help but think of the terrible sequels that ruined that brilliant original concept. Both are great movies and both bring up really interesting ideas but I think I might side with the Matrix. I actually enjoyed Inception more but for sheer impact on our culture and movies in general The Matrix wins, part of me questions whether Inception could exist without the original bold idea of the Matrix making so much money.

As long as we keep the sequels out of this, I'd have to easily say The Matrix.
It was an action movie that managed to be quite deep and symbolic, having some very iconic choreography and special effects. The writing was decent enough and the world that they portrayed was very neat.

Inception, on the other hand, I just remember as a movie I didn't enjoy and one that serves primarily as a joke.
"X-ception" and "we have to go deeper" being the ones most commonly quoted. I saw that movie in 2010 but can only give you a broad synopsis while I saw The Matrix in 1999 (and once again around 2003) and can give you a much more detailed spiel.

I don't know if that's an indicator of subjective taste or objective quality, though.
Probably the former. Christopher Nolan should not be allowed to write, regardless.

I believe I've made mention before about how Dicaprio creeps me out, so no vote on him.
