I use a messenger bag for carrying things I need for school. Other then that, I never felt I really needed any sort of bag to carry things that I needed with me around at all times.

Infact, if anything, I think a lot of women should reconsider whether they actually need to carry a purse around. I mean, I understand that some women do infact carry around enough things to justify the use of one. However, the problem I noticed is that some of them tend to fill one up with tons of junk they don't actually need to have with them.

I normally have a coat and jeans with tons of deep pockets. It's comfortable, a bit more organized and doesn't wear ones shoulder down.
I live in Miami so coats are a no-no (for health reasons, dont want to combust), I really would Like to have to coat to carry all my things. But alas I cant, thats why I have cargo shorts.

But I do admit that it would be nice to be able to have a purse/satchle without getting the odd looks.

One: I carry a tote bag whenever I need to take my note pad/writing utensils with me. Aside from that it's all pockets.

Two: Funny thing, purses and high heels were initially for men.
And up until about 150 years ago it was rather common to see men walking arm in arm with each other, even military officers. Other then an interesting fact, doesn't mean much in today's world.
What can I say but times change, people change, hairstyles change, interest rates fluctuate.

Well I need to carry three bottles of pills (two prescription, one pain killer), an epi-pen (which now goes everywhere after the last time I needed it and a good Samaritan had to break my car window to get it from the glove box while my throat was closing up), my phone, my glasses case, my wallet, my keys (both sets, personal and work, the work one is freaking huge), a pen, a notepad, etc.

Fitting all that on my person is doable in winter when I'm wearing a jacket, but come summer... not a chance.

1. Pockets: I surprise myself with how much I can get into them
2. Backpacks: I have many of different sizes and purposes, as a male I generally can get away with them in any situation (or a briefcase for more formal, it is my father's though)

Just reading the first page of the thread, the backpack option has been mentioned more than enough times to warrant me mentioning it again. Wait...

That said, I and a friend were actually joking around about making an alternative to a purse, marketed specifically for men. It would be like a sleek, futuristic-looking backpack, smaller than the usual pack, but still big enough to fit a few tools in there, with a couple of speakers and an iPod docking station, a couple of xenon lightbulbs on retractable telescopic arms, and a rechargeable battery pack with plugs for various techy gadgets. I have to say, if they sold man-purses like that one, I'd buy it.

announcement to men everywhere: this man is allowed to carry a hand bag if he wants to (although he is required to call it a satchel or something similar at all times)

Nope, don't have the amount of stuff that I need to carry around with me on a daily basis that I would need a purse to lug it all around in. Even if I did, I would just carry around my laptop while I was at it and carry that crap in my laptop case, as I have in the past.

I have pockets. And a nice coat with nice pockets. Or, if I really need to carry things around, I have my shoulder bag.

Technically, guys do have purses. Someone up there, earlier in the thread mentioned a satchel. I was going to suggest this

I use laptop-bags (messenger bags?) to carry around everything but my laptop...mainly because I fear ninja will beat me with nunchaku and take my laptop. I don't actually have the Messenger Bag of Holding but still: my bag can carry a bunch of stuff.

Here's another example!

Not really. It's not like i carry around a lot of things. Either i carry a backpack or I'm fine with my pockets.

Holy crud, YES. As a man who likes to carry his phone, DS, wallet, a few backup games, his 3DS CHARGER, and whatever else I may wind up carrying, I ALWAYS wish I didn't have to stuff it all in my pockets.

If I carry it them in my pockets, then they get all bulgy and uncomfortable, or otherwise pull my pants down. :/ . Theres JUST enough that I need a backpack, but its awkwardly light, and a hassle to get anything out of it.

Let's see... Keys, change, and pen in front right. Phone in front left, wallet back left, knife back right, mp3 right thigh (I wear carpenter's)

Nope, between deep pockets and not carrying much, I wouldn't use it anyway.

This is what I carry around, to be fair.

[sub]A Finnish gas-mask bag, if anyone's wondering.[/sub]

Roughly the same size as a lady's handbag (the UK-and-possibly-elsewhere term for what you're describing), means my jeans aren't distorted, and the lines of my coat aren't ruined by the book in one pocket or my change-heavy wallet in another.

Also, I can carry a reasonable size of notebook, my massive Russian dictionary in case I'm doing a translation in town, or my computer speakers if I want to broadcast whatever's on my mp3 player while I'm in the park with my mates.

Cargo shorts in the summer, cargo pants in the winter. Solves a lot of problems, and without any swingy straps!

Things that get carried with me at all times; wallet, keys, ipod and phone. All these things fit nicely into my pockets, so carrying a large purse round seems a bit redundant. Also most girls I know tend to be more disorganised the bigger their purse as they keep losing things in it.
