No! Obiously not. But some diagnosies are just plain up bullshit. Ohh and I hate the people who plead insane. I mean if you planed a elaborate murder of all your family and friends your not insane, your not a human

I volunteer at a book club for mentally disabled kids. One of them has Down syndrome. The others have other mental illnesses of varying degrees. A few have facial deformities that go with it.

No, after knowing these kids, there's no doubt in my mid that they exist.
Well, Down's and such are more developmental disorders than "mental," but I also work with children with mental disabilities such as Tourette's (sp?) and ADHD. I used to think that ADHD was a "lazy psychiatrist" label, but now that I have to manage 4 un-medicated severe ADHD children... It looks like an uncontrollable disorder with behavioral effects. Seeing an ADHD kid get worked up about something trivial and then start crying because they "don't wanna be like that"... :( Severe disorders are not to be messed with.

a couple of people are saying theres no need for arguments because it is obvious they exist.
i know that much, im more or less trying to find out how many people do believe they dont. hardly a scientific study, but still.
although i want to go on to become a psychologist ( start my BsC psychology course in september) so me not believing it would be rather more stupid that regular "non-believers"

Well if your insane you'd ever admit to being insane... unless ofcourse you get a shorter sentence if you do... OK my point sucks.

i wasn't trying to say ADHD isnt real. ill edit my post if thats what it sounds like. i just think it is massively over diagnosed. as some one else has said, timmy is failing in school, it must be ADHD. also helps give excuses to bad parents. although im sure there are real cases of ADHD, just not as common as psychiatrists would have you believe

You'd be surprised by the amount of people who say depression doesn't exist or that it's just a matter of getting a hold of yourself and putting your life in order again.

However, I don't really beleive in mental illness. Some people see the world a different way. You can never truly prove yours is the right one.

But there are a great variety of mental disorders with very specific symptoms, you can look them up in the ICD-10 for example.
Also the DSM-IV - if mental illness is a conspiracy, then the APA and all other mental health practitioners are the conspirators, and seeing as most of them are making an honest living treating people who suffer from debilitating conditions I think they'd be rather insulted by that.

I agree with orannis. Things like ADD and whatnot that have no physical presence on the body besides behaviour can be said to not really exist, but if they really-

Actually, screw all of the above. Now I have only two things to say:
1)Down syndrome isn't a mental illness it's a chromosomical disorder, EDIT: Point taken already while I wrote this crap
2)Do any mental illnesses have any physical effect on the body? If not, how do we know they exist?

While I believe many mental d-Wait....Okay...Here I go *raise flame shield*.

Sometimes people make up diseases to make up for their own shortcomings. Ones like "social anxiety" managed to almost get a ***** at my school off charges of assault, "How?" you ask.

Well she claimed the only way she could over-come social anxiety is by drinking (alchohol), why she didn't take the medication prescribed to her at the time is way beyond me.
Oh wait, she said "You can't mix meds with alcohol", THE ***** IS 16! You can't drink in a public area (this was a park) when you are 16!

So she claimed she had to be drunk to fit in with some people, however she was so drunk she threw a beer bottle and it hit my mates friend...on the face, he now has 4 scars, so she managed to get off-wait, no she didn't, the lawyer raised some questions (and statements) like "Why was a 16 year old drinking under-aged?" "Why didn't she just take her meds, she was fully aware that it's illegal to drink in a public area at the age of 16!" "Fuck her!" (Ok that last statement was me). Fortunately she was charged on Assault and 2 or 3 other charges.

Sometimes people make up diseases. This is just sick, real people with real disabilities; People with Autism, schizophrenia and other diseases need help, we are helping nobody by letting these fuck-tards make up shit because they are inherently irresponsible wastes of resources and are scum.
THIS exactly this

I believe that they exist, except for ADD, I think that pharmaceutical companies made that up.

Mental illness does exist and it's because of the ignorance of a surprising amount of people that there are so many people suffering because of it.
However, shit like dyslexia is just a middle class excuse for not being bothered.

Mental illness is something that modern society is pretty much helpless against. There are no cures and one of the most effective treatments is electro-shock therapy. Yes it still exists and actually works and doctors are experimenting with installing electrodes under the skull for smaller, more frequent treatments. If this doesn't scare you, have a brain frying device inserted into your skull because you don't think like everyone else, then you probably have known someone with a mental illness and realize the desperation that leads to this kind of thing.

I realise it's a topic already touched upon, but ADHD typically in young children tends to come across to me as a cop-out for parents who haven't figured out how to control their kids just yet, I mean sure i've seen ADHD last from infancy to to the young teen stage because my best mate's little brother has it and has had it for a very long time now. So i'm not saying it's not real or anything like that.

I just think it's so easy to blame a behavioural problem that stems no further than: "That kid is just a roudy dick-bag" on ADHD now days...
Mainly because when people see a kid with ADHD they will be like "What's this kids problem?" until someone tells them about the ADHD at which point the person automatically stops giving a damn, provided the child comes no where near them...

So It's really become more of a Cop-out then a genuine "mental illness" At least in the majority of cases.

Well, extreme anxiety and distress can cause a variety of effects, including hair loss, diarrhoea, vomiting etc. But, I do stress the extreme bit, it's not exactly common for people to have their hair fall out after a bout of depression, but, there still are physiological symptoms that come on as a result of psychological problems.

As a simple example: You know when you get butterflies in your stomach when you're doing something stressful, like a job interview etc? Well, imagine that, only the feeling is so strong it causes vomiting.

Why would they fake it if they didn't really have problems? And how would you explain the high suicide rates among young males?
