Get the collection. Snake Eater is far better than MGS4, plus it has James Bond style music.
Don't forget that it has the most sensible story of the franchise, aside from the 100+ year old sniper and the guy covered in bees.
strange how I had the least fun with snake eater out of all metal gear solid games though still enough to play through it once ^^

A very good one indeed but the best one I've come across is the story of "The Whispered World" a point & click adventure about a depressive clown. Boring game most of the time but it all unfolds in the last 5 minutes of the game and I had to cry for hours! would've been worse if I were a father.

OT: I'd really recommend the collection first and if you've got a gamecube try to get MGS: Twin Snakes somewhere it's a remake of the first MGS in the engine of MGS2 which is nice^^

otherwise MGS1 on PSN though be warned I'd call the polygon models horrible by now though not as bad as FF VII

What's this, no love for my beloved Sons of Liberty?

I haven't played Peace Walker, but so far I only read that it's one of the best in terms of gameplay and it's difficult (maybe for the newcomers though), and Snake Eater has some great moments too, the only gripe I can find in its gameplay it's the camouflage system... yeah pretty much that, and it's because it's a pain in the ass to pause, select face paint, select uniform, exit.

And Sons of Liberty? gameplay is good, boss battles are great too (How about you alone fighting not one but 20 Metal Gears?) but the best thing is the story and codec conversations. Take it easy if you're playing that game, for me the best thing that MGS2 has to offer are the codec calls, even a simple non-story wise codec call can leave you thinking about a bunch of stuff... while others leave you chuckling. Besides, they make the characters look more real in a game where you can't trust what you're seeing and hearing as real.

So I'll go ahead and tell you to get the HD Collection, Guns of the Patriots it's a good game, but seriously, 3 games in just one package? gimme gimme gimme, I need some more.

this isnt star wars, it doesnt make sense for you to start at part 4.

start from the beginning and then play 4

i disagree with everyone saying mgs4 is a movie and not a game. yeah it has long cutscenes but if thats a problem for you then why do you like mgs so much? the series has always placed its focus on the story and while playing mgs 4, or any of the other games in the series, i never found myself wishing for the cutscene to end. mgs 4 was more a third person shooter than a stealth game, but thats the only thing thats really that much different from the rest of the series

Haha not a single person so far thinks you should get MGS4.

Honestly though, it's not really for newcomers. You won't grasp the gravity of the story without having at least one games background. The HD collection gives you three games to create context for MGS4.

Try and download the original Metal Gear Solid from the PSN, it's a classic.

MGS collection. It has 3, which is probably the best introduction to the series any new-comer can want, beyond 1. It also has 2 (which is also awesome, just not as good as a starting point as 3) and Peace walker (which I have never played, but is supposed to be good as well). 2 of the greatest games of all time for the price of one, plus another that is supposed to be pretty good. How can you go wrong? :)

MGS3 and Peace Walker are two of the finest games I have ever played. MGS3 is right beside Half Life, as one of my favorite games.

liquidsolid: It's not that bad. MGS4 was my first game of the series.

Ideally you should get the original Metal Gear Solid first, either on the PSN or an old physical copy from somewhere and then get MGS HD Collection and play through them in the order the games were originally released in. While MGS4 has its shortcomings it wraps up all of the loose ends and bizarre plot twists from MGS2 and 3, and similarly MGS2, in my opinion, requires a playthrough of MGS1 to be able to be fully appreciated. I couldn't imagine MGS4 being anything other than a let down if you don't at least play MGS2 and 3 first.

If you've never played the first three games, then four will do nothing but not make sense. Despite what anyone else may say, the MGS games are the perfect example of sequels and story working together. 3 is really the only one that could be played as a stand-alone, but even that had some heavy references with 2 and 4. There are also things that happen in 3 which are explained in 1, and things that happen in 1 which are explained in 4.

Metal Gear Solid Collection should always come first. M.G.S. 3: Snake Eater is still my favorite in the series.

And if you have a gamecube, I'd suggest you get the first Metal Gear Solid. Realy great game. (Or you can get it on PSN.)

The collection hands down. There is so much back story you need to enjoy MGS4. The story is confusing enough and might just be incomprehensible without knowing the backstory.

This is not even a contest. Even if the "collection" was just Snake Eater, it would still flatten MGS4. I would easily place SE in the top 10 games of all time. The ending, despite coming straight out of left field, is movingly tragic and brought me to tears. It's also by far the most accessible, as it doesn't have all of the obnoxious in-jokes and being a prequel doesn't have to try and make sense of the hilarious storylines concocted in the 80s.

Collection times google (which is 1 followed by 100 zeros)
MGS4 is a game that is only for hardcore scholars of Metal Gear, if there is ANYTHING about the series that you don't know than you will be very, very, veeeery lost.
But once you've played MGS1,2,3, the original Japanese Metal Gears 1+2, Portable ops, and Peace Walker, than I think you'll have some fun with it.
(And feel free to skip Snakes Revenge and the Metal Gear Acids, those aren't cannon, also they suck)

One vote for Metal Gear Solid 4. Who the hell screwed up the chance at 100%? *Shakes fist* Why I oughta...

Sooooo....I actually like the gameplay in Metal Gear Solid 4 quite a bit. I always feel like I'm struggling against the controls whenever I play the previous games in the series, but it's much more natural in Guns of the Patriots. That said, start with the collection (or, as others have said, start with Metal Gear Solid 1 on the PSN if it's an option for you). If you're in for some more old school gaming, start up Metal Gear Solid 3 and then play Metal Gear 1 and 2 from there.

And the naysayers are right on one thing: The cutscenes in MGS4 are stupid long. And they are often boring. There's a couple parts where you meet a character, and they almost immediately go into some boring overlong exposition. Then, as if that weren't boring enough, they cut away from the scene and show a freaking Powerpoint exposition while still talking. The Ocelot scenes are entertaining, though...

But I reiterate, the gameplay is good. And there is a good bit of it there. But there's just as much in cutscenes as well, and possibly more depending on how you play.

Play the original games first. If you don't you will get totally lost in MGS4.

Believe me, MGS4 is a lot more enjoyable when you actually know what the hell is going on.

In a series like Metal Gear Solid, you have to start with the collection. And get MGS1 as well, then feel free to get MGS4. Although chances are for all of these together, judging by the price for MGS:HDC and how much I got MGS4 for a couple of years ago (about £10, tops) you could probably get all the games in the series for the price of a normal game combined.

Do I really have to say anything at this point? I am a diehard fan of the series, but I thought of all the games I had played, that 4 was the low point. It wasn't bad mind you, it just wasn't as good.
Especially the hour long cutscene with Otacon and Naomi between two of the chapters. I like a bit of romance but that felt forced and was uninteresting.
Still get the fourth game, but not after playing the original Metal Gear Solid (Not twin snakes just bear with the ps1 graphics. Trust me you will appreciate it all the much more at the end.) and get the collection.

It's spelled googol and the biggest googol is googolplexian. The biggest number though is grahams number.

On topic. A warning about MGS4, it breaks the triangle button.

My thoughts on which game to get are on the first page.

There are a lot of MGS4 haters on this site!
