It is awesome and its called Battle for Middle Earth 1 and 2.
they are IMHO the best RTSes out there.

on a side note is it RTSs or RTSes?
Have you played the Total War games?

BFME is more like AoE isn't it?
yeah its is.
I have played the demo for Napoleon:total war and didn't like it very much.
How much different are the total war games then the AOE games?

You have Fourth Age: Total War and Lord of the Rings: Total War for Rome, and Third Age: Total War for Medieval 2, and relax, Third Age has its own installer so you only need to run the exe file after you downloaded it ;)

I also think there are people working on a First Age and Second Age mods to Medieval 2...

There are Total War mods out there that do this already. Actually... I had alot of fun with some of them. I get a kick out of leading the hordes of Mordor to consume everything. I'm just crazy like that. XD

It already exists. As stated by several others :D For both Rome: TW and Medieval 2: TW. A mod that is.

BFME games > RTS games

More or less.
RTS game series > RTSes

Wut? I don't get it.

And people, stop saying "BFME" again and again, it's been said and Total War is drasticly different from that kind of RTS.

Everything else that I can say has allready been said. I personaly liked the Third Age: Total War mod for Medieval 2: Total War.

Here's is the link if anyone's interested: http://www.moddb.com/mods/third-age-total-war

Play Rome, then you'll understand Total War

There's a mod which converts Medieval 2 to just that. I have it. It's rather good.

There you are, a trailer.
Are their any missions? like Helms Deep and Minas Tirith?

I think that's what the OP means

OT: I think a starwars one would be quite awesome, although probably complicated.

Loads of vehicles, Unit types, aerial units, but it could work.

I mean come on, imagine Geonosis, or even Hoth!

Very diffrent. Total war are turned based and much things happend from a campagin map where you fix your cities etc etc. The only RTS part is the actual battles where you can take direct control over your units.

But I am scared of mods :( I'm not that big on PC Gaming and some mods require me to do more than copy and paste....
I'm fairly sure it's just your standard .exe installer... mods really aren't tough most of the time.
Plus its more or less exactly what you're looking for.

Yes, but make it another title than Total War. Total War always has its setting in real history and can therefore also be informative.

You are totally hitting my geeky fangirl impulses in all the right places.

Who wouldn't love the chance to reenact the battle of Helms Deep with huge elven and human armies?

Already been done, as others have pointed out:

Damn good mod too, like seriously professional quality stuff. And yes, the giant elephants as well as hero units and the like are in the game as well.

Yep. Third Age: Total War is already out there. I tried the Rome version and it felt a little shoddily made and incomplete, so maybe a professional studio is what's needed to make it shine.

This sounds weird even to me but is Middle Earth big enough? The actual canonical map doesn't seem to me to be as big as the maps in Total War.
This easily rectified by showing each little village but I dunno. To be honest a real Tolkien fan will hopefully correct me but it didn't take the fellowship that long to traverse the world.
It took about 18 years or something from the very start of the Fellowship of the Ring for them to get back. I can't remember the exact time, but it was surprisingly long.

Ah It's just Bfme's (yes i know srry) battles minus buildings and plus an economy Orc= rush on a global scale. Crap.
But yeah sounds good but some areas need smaller provinces.
Eg Hobbits Easterlings (unless they're like mercs or client kingdoms.)
Edit: I mean more detail than human farm#5.

Not a bad idea, but there are I want to see other things given the Total War treatment first. Specifically Warhammer Fantasy and 40K.
Warhammer Battle March. Total war clone set in Warhammer Fantasy.

and Yes I would love to see LOTR Total War
