I don't see how achievments could hurt the game. They could drive both newcomers and jaded vets to try funny stuff. Those who don't like it can just ignore them.

Now, achievments that sum "points" and that could generate "I have a bigger e-peen" discussions, those I wish would just never be implemented.

So YES to achievments and NO to any kind of stupid gamerscore.
Totaly agree with this Achivements would be a good idea for people who are new to the game or just want to challage them self a diffrent way but having a score tied to that would be wrong just wrong :(

I'm a fan of achievements personally and if they encourage new things thats all the better, I don't see why there's all the hate on them, if you don't like em don't go out of your way to earn em. The "tree" sounds like a nice idea too, as long as its done well and there isn't some stupidly hard one blocking out loads of others.

Also, wonder if he will add one for getting a pig in a cart...?

OH, YES! YES!
Minecraft has started already to get boring for me. I need a some type of goal to do something and achivements would be a great way for me to play the game and try another types of gameplay.

As usual with achievements, they're there for the people that want them and those who don't don't have to bother. I don't see how this could possibly be a bad thing?
"Because the possibility of someone else enjoying this game in a way that I don't frightens me" and "This game is going towards the direction of Mainstream gaming"...

Sad part is some people really think like that, makes me sad...

But hell yeah! Welcome them! As he said 'They are optional' so you don't need to bother with them, so stop being such a wannabe-unique-snowflake-who-thinks-he-matters-to-the-world.

Blimey, didn't think this would get such a huge response. My thoughts on the matter are much like everyone elses. If it makes the game more fun to play or offers challenges then sure, why not?

I think Left 4 Dead 2 is a good example of achievements doing this. The ones you get for completing a campaign using just melee weapons or for resucing Gnome Chompski make things more interesting.
