Missing Manuals

All my crazed fans know well that I often trail away mid-point during reviews to ramble on something or other, usually something that makes me fume. While a certain level of this is allowable, I feel that some anger-venting sessions are too long and ungainly for putting in the middle of a feature. With this in mind, I am starting another mini-series, which will allow me to come up for air in the endless sea of rage I find myself in. Recurring themes are: stupid people; irritating gaming fads; idiots; pointless features; smegheads; games that should be made but aren?t; and finally boneheads. Assuming you all survive the latest experiment, I hope you enjoy partaking in but a smidgen of my madness.

We?ve all been there: you either order or find in the shops a pre-owned game, and purchase it. Shivering with anticipation upon your arrival at home, the box is opened only to reveal: the disc, the usual spam they put in there and nothing more. Well suck an elf, there?s no manual. Okay, it never serves as anything more than a momentary distraction, but for the sake of completeness I like having them, especially ever since I began my bargain-bin scrounging obsession (87 PS2 games alone at time of writing, and very much counting...).

Nay, my complaint is not in particular the absence of the booklets in itself, but rather the fact that I cannot imagine what kind of fool it would take to lose the things in the first place. Let?s go through the motions: Say you need to look at the manual for whatever reason. You take it out, read it, maybe put it to one side for a minute, and put it back. Hey presto, you?ve a perfect, infallible system. Well evidently not, judging by how quickly all Blockbuster?s little instruction sets go missing.

It all links back to how some folk simply don?t handle their gizmos with enough attention. For example, a close compadrè of mine (who is also a faithful reader, so I expect he might catch on right about....now) always seems to just put his discs ?be they DVD, PS2, whatever- into any box that?s close at hand. To someone who alphabetises, writes down, counts and further still categorises his titles across all his systems, my mate?s behaviour is nothing short of sacrilege. The crotchety old man in me likes keeping things ordered and proper, in utter contrast to the anarchy on display in my amigo?s case.
Just to confirm the insanity of it all, my good friend has managed to misplace a game (Toy Story 2 on PS1, if you must know. What?) I had intended to buy off him for a knock-down price. ?Typical? fails to give the situation its due.

Of course, that case brings up a valid point: stupidity is not the only possible cause of carelessness, for a person?s indifference to the well-being of their property can also be responsible, as it was with my accomplice, who shall doubtless wish to have words with me after this.

Luckily we victims have a counterattack at our disposal, all primed and ready. Websites such as ReplacementDocs.com are manned by helpful lads and lasses who scan their game manuals, uploading them to the internets so that all may enjoy. The selection on my site of choice is impressive, with even more obscure titles covered. Wow-wow-wee.

In conclusion, malnourished minds and uncaring gits join forces across the globe so as to irritate me, with considerable success, although means exist to reduce the undesirable effects.

I can relate, I love manuals and always read them through before playing the game, it's part of my ritual for a new game.
I usualy don't buy used but when I do I always make sure I get the manual.
