I enjoy free to play MMOs as long as they aren't like world of warcraft. Something different, ya'know.
There are MMOs that aren't WoW clones? oO
I'm having a hard time finding them.
Dynasty warriors online, Savage 2, Vindictus, League of legends. Those are just the 4 on my desktop right now but there are quite a few more.
Savage 2 and LoL aren't the same genre. :|
I probably mean MMORPGs.

I occasionally play Trickster (since they FINALLY patched the Win 7 compatibility issues) and it is definitely not a WoW clone.
OP: For any MMO not named WoW a free-to-play, micro-transaction model is the best way to go. Look at how it breathed life back into games like D & D Online and LoTR Online. The former had their profits triple the first three months after the conversion.

I feel like the people who complain about mmo costs are kids and I mean this in the nicest way possible. I remember when I was a teen and I hated the idea of pay for play because I can to beg my parents to let me use their credit cards. It was such a hassle to convince them and saving money as a teen was difficult for me so I often had to ask for my parents to front the cost. I'm not 23 and have a steady income and $15 is chump change.

I'd much rather pay a monthly subsciption then have to buy content through micro transactions. I'm not a big fan of the combination of them either (I'm looking at you WoW vanity pets).

Yes, if the game was fun. Usually the F2P ones are either crap or crap unless you pay money for the good weapons and abilities.
I'm not even a huge MMO fan (I've played WoW for a total of maybe two hours at a friend's house) and I paid 200 dollars for the infinite subscription to DCU, firstly because I hate subscription fees, second because I actually like the game, and third because I want this trend to catch on.

I don't mind paying some extra money for a large game that has to pay out money for server upkeep. I can understand why MMOs DO have monthly fees. I just don't like paying an indefinite amount of money for them. If I want to stop playing DCU for a month or two and then come back to it (which i constantly do with long games) I can, and it won't cost me a dime. I'm also not constantly playing the game because I want to get my money's worth. I paid once. Yeah it was a lot for one game, but in about a year I'd have paid that anyways and now I don't ever have to worry about it again.

The cost of an MMO may seem a lot when you're younger, but it's pretty damn inconsequential.

In reality, you're probably getting a really REALLY great deal. Let's say you can play about an hour a day. That's 30 hours a month. The standard fee is $15/month. That's FIFTY CENTS AN HOUR. That's a really good fucking deal and there are few places in modern entertainment where you can get that kind of value. Hell, even if you can only manage 30 min a day, that's still a dollar an hour, which is still a killer deal.

Having played both, I much prefer subscription games where everyone pays and everyone is on an equal footing. Since every remotely polished free MMO I've seen has a pay-for-perks model, what you end up with is a horrific lack of balance. First, the PvE might be balanced for people who pay (an ideal business move on the part of the company). Second, any PvP is likely to be very unfair. Third, since there's no limit on HOW MUCH you can pay for perks, you're going to get some people who don't just buy a couple of items to get an edge, but buy all of the very best items and summarily destroy anyone else.

Most certainly would. I've only played WoW for the free month I got when I got it for Christmas, and I would have continued to play it if I had the moneyz to pay.

Played quite a few in my time.

They're generally pretty terrible.

Either it's the same grinder over and over again, or it's some vaguely unique game with as much stuff you have to pay for as possible.

First off I'm not sure if this has been posted before, but I've never seen it and I want to ask. So I want to know would you (if you dont already that is) play MMO's like WoW, DC Universe,Star Wars the Old Republic, etc...if you could play them for free? Let me state this is purely hypothetical. I understand that it would be nearly if not completely imposible to actually reales something like WoW and keep it up dated the way they did without any money coming back in.

I realize that there are lots of free MMO's out there already and I've tried them and they just dont really have any polish so I dont bother with them. This question came about cause I tried WoW a couple months back on the 10 day trial, just to see if I would like it. I did surprisingly but in the 10 days I had to play I only got to play a total of about 10 hours. My problem was justifing paying the monthly fee when I could only play a couple hours a week on it. I would imagine Im not the only person that has had this problem, at least to some degree that is. So would you?
Certain MMOs (like WoW) need a monthly fee to run.

I suggest adding an option "I will pay for MMOs if the price is justifiable" instead of "I like to pay for my fun".

The way I (and evidently all of my friends*) see it is, if a games free then there is absolutely NO reason why you shouldnt try it out.

*I say this because today I told my mates about Champions Online going free-to-play and they went and downloaded it straight away... Tomorrow is going to be an awesome in Champions Online. (Thinking about creating a Super Group called Nightmare Inc. as my guy is called "Scar-Crow" and is a scarecrow looking guy.)

im having a lot of fun with the F2P 1s theres a good f2p copy of every p2p out there.
runes of magic instead of WOW....
alliance of valiant arms or soldier stead of CoD....
you just gota know where to look
besides, paying a monthly fee is almost torture especially for the grindy ones, why bother?

I hate waisting time. Actually, as much as I would like to try some of the newer MMOs, I rarely get more than a couple hours a day to play games (thanks to work, school and family), so I usually find my time better wasted with a good single player game. Besides, for competitive multiplayer I just strap on some armor and go collecting bruises in the SCA. It's fun, gives me some exercise, and prevents me from looking like Gollum in my cave.

On of the main reason I dont like playing MMO's is because of the recuring fee...
That is why I love MMO's like Guild Wars, or even Face of Mankind, which is totally free.
I have been playing EVE Online lately, and what I like about it is that you can use in-game money to buy another month of play time, which I think is something that most MMO's should(if they don't) have, maybe other ones do but I havnt seen one until EO.

The poll doesn't make any sense and when you pay for an MMO you are paying for all the stuff that gets added to it, along with just upkeeping the cost of the damn game.

Put it this way, WoW would have died within a year after its release if it was free.

Eh, question is : / because I HAVE played free mmos AND p2p mmos.

Overall I'd say it's easier to find a good P2P mmo than it is to find a good F2P mmo, but there is a lot of crap to dig through whichever route you're going. I'm currently playing Fallen Earth, which is P2P.

Dynasty warriors online
O,O (thats my drooley face)

How is Dynasty Warriors Online? Is it anything like the actual games? Hows the combat system? Like the games and if so which one? As long as it aint #6 then I will be happy.

Details, need, <3 Dynasty Warriors sooooooooo much!

Edit: What? Closed beta? That mean I cant play? NOOOOOO~wait *puts on Darth Vader helmet* okay now. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! *cry*

Edit part deux: Oh and smeg Vindictus and its america only smeg!
Its not closed beta its completely free over at Aeria Games. Its pretty much DW5 but online. Its not really like the games though as units dont move around the map. Its more PvP oritended with you and buds fighting against other people online. It does support 12 on 12 battles but thats usually on the weekends unless theres a campaign which is more similar to your traditional DW game. Not sure if units move around in those as I've never done one since DWO follows the dates and battles listed in romance of the three kingdoms. Overall its fine, its Dynasty warriors but online. So if you enjoy Dynasty warriors youll probably enjoy this.

I play Guild Wars. I kep seeing people saying guild wars charges but they don't. And buying stuff in their item shop is all cosmetic. Stuff that isn't cosmetic are: an extra bank tab ($10) and a few extra flavor missions ($10 for the bundle). This is more like DLC than what people describe it as.

I have played many F2P MMOs and many P2P MMOs. Guild Wars is where IMO the players win. Now I am just continuing to play 1 and waiting on 2. Guild Wars is proof that maintaining servers and constant content events doesn't cost as much as alot of MMOs let on.

I don't think "justifiable" is the right term there. It is justifiable that as an MMO gains more players they should offer much better deals than the initial $15 a month. If an MMO charges 15 a month and has at least 1 million subscribers all year, they make $180m fo every million subscribers per year. Do you really think Blizzard spends upwards of 180 million dollars a year just to patch the game and keep the servers up? No. Now take that times about 3-4 and that is the money they are really pulling in. This is not "justifiable". Perhaps it could be in a psychological way, but not in a tangible way. What most AAA title MMOs do is use this baseline as a convincing economical approach and most people buy it. This is a combination of a couple typical marketing strategies.

Yea I do. It cost a lot of money to keep those servers up. WoW has quite a few subscribers.

Also do you really think the only thing that the fee's goes to is keeping the servers up and patching? Blizzard has employees...
