So as this genre grows I feel that we need to have a pointless discussion about what it should be called, why? Mostly because I am bored and need to waste some time but also just kind of curious to which term is most used.

I call them MOBA's as while LoL, DoTA and other big names in the genre have RTS control schemes, games like smite, awesomenauts and super monday night combat are also in this genre and have nothing to do with RTS's they are also, beyond anything that's core to the genre, nothing like DoTA.

So what term do you call this genre and please say why.

I call them Aeon of Strife (AoS) since that's where they originated from, and, for me, it describes the genre perfectly.

I've been calling them MOBAs for quite some time now, and I suspect that's the term that will stick with me.

I actually have no idea what it's meant to stand for, though.

multiplayer online battle arena which I think is a pretty accurate description for the genre

I find ARTS while not ideal a still far superior term than MOBA, which is as nondescript as you can possibly get.

As it is for pretty much anything related to multiplayer.

well awesomenauts and other MOBA have nothing to do with RTS's so only action applies which applies to so many games. While arenas through out history have been a place of people in intense fights to the death the arena is much more small scale then most multiplayer games and the intensity is brought to live by the fact that each fight you have is very much down to skill and not the 'who spotted the other one first' dynamic of other multiplayer games.

I'm pretty sure the most commonly agreed upon genre is Aeon of Strife Styled Fortress Assault Game Going On Two Sides.

"MOBA" is an acronym that you can pronounce without it being already a word like "ARTS". My brain tells me to use that.
