Pessimism in my opinion is better, because you don't feel bad when you're let down, and if you get what you want, it's a pleasant suprise.

I can go from optimistic to pessimistic in a bat of an eye, with in the same sentence. Particularly when trying to rationalise things to help motivate people.
Massive mood swings i guess.

I would assume that you've never heard the phrase "A pessimist is what an optimist calls a realist"? So in some people's minds, realism and pessimism are one and the same. That's not what I think, though.
