In alot of FPS, all the cut-scenes are from first person view, and for me it kinda makes the cutscenes less exicitng. When I played BFBC2 single-player I loved how most of the cut-scenes were from the third-person perspective. IMO it makes the scenes more exiting. Also I noticed for some reason that in alot of games when the cut-scenes are from first person view, you suddenly stop talking, like in MW2, when u start controlling Soap, suddenly he stops talking when he did talk when you werent him. The only games that I have seen before that have had the character still talk during first-person view cut-scenes was in crysis.

so should more FPS have cut-scenes from third-person perspective?

I too enjoy third-person cutscenes a lot more than first-person. It let's me get to know the character a little better. I'd rather be playing a character than a blank slate in body armour anyway.

First things first, FPS's really need to start letting me see my damn feet.

Nothing kills immersion more than looking down and realizing your just a floating camera with arms...

As for which type of cutscene I would prefer, I'll take the one that lets me see my damn feet.

I actually like the first person perspective more for cutscenes.

Helps to bond you with the character, even while you aren't directly controlling them.

Just sort of kills the immersion for me when they switch it out of the head.

This goes double for vehicle sections.

Developers, please, we know that car isn't controlling itself. How 'bout some arms?

Yeah, it started as trying to make you feel like the protagonist. Now it just ruins many perfectly good stories.

*Cough cough COD...*

I like being able to see my characters faces, no, not one hidden behind futuristic space helmet

Although I still love you Halo

Hows about... No cut scenes in shooters... Keep it all in your control, ala Half Life or Bioshock.

I like the first-person perspective, but not when it's an actiony scene that just makes you feel like you're on the inside of a dryer. I liked Bioshock's cutscenes (Here we go again :p) because they felt intimate, like I was in the scene. For instance, when Jack was getting ready to splice up for the first time and you can't tell me that the "WYK" twist would be as emotional in third-person as it is in first-person. I just like the feeling of unbroken control of a character during an emotional scene, instead of feeling like I'm now watching a movie. Although I do wish your characters would talk in first-person more. :/

A-fucking-men.

Just the addition of a visible body and interactions with enviorments (Like opening doors and stuff) adds a little bit of immersion to any game. I can honestly say that Far Cry 2 wouldn't have been as fun without the enviorment interactions.

well in halo it was good becuase the cut-scenes were third-person and the character had a voice, though you did never see their face, the other stuff makes up for it.

I agree, although it's not for every game. Bioshock did it wonderfully, as you pointed out, and Half Life also did it well, but it just doesn't work for some games. Overall, however, I prefer first person cutscenes.

I agree. I think that cut scenes should in a sense be from the first person perspective a lot more. However, I also think that just cause the cut scenes are from the first person doesn't mean that you can skip out on developing the character you play. All games should have mirrors in them, so that you can see your character model. and they should allow you to see what you look like early on, so your opinion of yourself isn't blown midway through the game.

Zooming into the back of the head should be punished with the death penalty. Looking at the character, FLASH OF WHITE then you see through his perspective with funky HUD, meanwhile, is slightly more tolerable. Zooming into the eyes should have you awarded a Nobel Peace Prize.

Sad in some ways, but so very true. Sad because floating cameras with guns taped onto them occasionally aided by floating hands are garbage and haven't had a place in a first person game for years now and yet some companies still use them. This is the most immersion breaking thing in a first person game (floating) hands down. It's right up there with mute heroes as something that needed to die in game design as of a long time ago.

As to 3rd person cutscenes.. I think it depends on whether or not the game has a defined character or not. If you're playing as a defined character like Master Chief it's not too bad when the game goes 3rd person. If YOU are supposed to be the character it's pretty jarring when all of a sudden you're seeing "yourself" in the 3rd person. Overall I think I prefer 1st person cutscenes as long as they are well done, but the OP is quite right in saying that when they are done wrong they don't just go poorly, they go horribly.

I could not care less about what perspective we view cutscenes from in the genre that has far and away the worst stories in gaming.

I know, I mean the storyline in Half-Life 2 was terrible, just like Portal and Bioshock and...wait.

Generalizations like the one you made are never a good idea.

At any rate, I'll take whatever cutscene format is most effective for bonding me to my character. Half-Life would have sucked if there were 3rd-person cutscenes just as Halo would have sucked if there were first-person cutscenes.

Number one, Portal is not an FPS. It is in first person and you hold a gun-like object, but it's absolutely not an FPS. Number two, Half-Life had a pretty mediocre storyline looking at its story alone: the entire thing can be summed up as "save the world from evil aliens" and you wouldn't miss many details. What made Half-Life great was the incredible immersive world that was created. There's actually a really great article on Half-Life's (and Portal's) storyline in the latest issue of the Escapist which goes more in depth into this.

As for Bioshock, I won't deny for a second the awesomeness of that game's story, but the amount of praise it received just for being an FPS with a good story leads to the exception proving the rule.

When it comes down to it, people are often hard-pressed to name a single FPS with a good storyline outside of Half-Life 2 and Bioshock, and to me that earns the genre it's title of "worst stories in gaming." There will of course always be exceptions to any statement like the one I made, but when two out of millions accomplish the task of writing a competent, compelling, and memorable story, I'd say it's not too unfair to make that generalization.

A mix would be nice, have a few third person cutscenes to build up the character and a few first person ones to add to the immersion. Though why not go at the Duke Nukem angle and have mirrors scattered about?

There are alot of things that need changing. It's just I don't have that balls to do anything about it. Cut-scenes are the last things that need changing.

I really don't care what you use, I just demand three things:

1. I want to be able to see my feet.
2. I want to be able to see my reflection.
3. I'd like my person to talk while in first-person perspective. It worked perfectly fine for Star Wars Republic Commando, why not anything else?
