I look back very fondly on Morrowind. Tried to play it again a couple of months ago, wasn't satisfied with vanilla, got lost inbetween tons of mods, gave up.
Nevertheless, I prefer MW, if only because I was younger when I played it. The only thing that comes to my mind concerning Oblivion are some pretty dungeons (which ultimately all looked very similar) and far too many stupid oblivion gates...when they told me there's one in front of every major city, I lost all interest in playing any further. And I think that was pretty early on in the main quest...

My work laptop won't run oblivion, so I've been giving morrowind a chance.
for the technology available, it's an amazing game, and back in 2002 it must have been amazing, but the things oblivion did well are just too lacking there.
As Rutskarn says in the first part of his oblivion let's play
Here?s the thing: like Fallout 3, Oblivion is at its worst when it is compared to its predecessor. That?s not because its predecessor is much better (even if it is), it?s because the things that Oblivion does well weren?t really a part of the Morrowind experience and the things that Morrowind does well are by far Oblivion?s greatest weaknesses. Thus, if you?re coming into Oblivion without any prior expectations, you think: Good game, a few weak points. If you?re expecting a successor to Morrowind, your favoritest game ever, you think: Where the hell are my ski mask and breaching shotgun?

Oblivion. I played Morrowind once and got killed by a mudcrab. The combat in Morrowind is HORRIBLE. Unplayable without user mods. you do NOT do a dice combat system in a non turn based game.

Games age. Morrowind doesn't stand up to the test of time. I used to love it, and I still do, but it can be unplayable without mods. The problem is when the people on Xbox.com who know the Elder Scrolls as "tEh Oblivun series" play 20 minutes of it and go, "lol combat + graphics are shit it sucks you pc fuckers lied".

I don't see Oblivion as too dumbed down compared to Morrowind. They just do different things. Oblivion's strengths aren't Morrowind's strengths and vice versa.

YET, if you went on RPG forums circa... ooh, 2003? You'd find the Elder Scrolls hardcore accusing Morrowind of being a dumbed down Daggerfall. Absolutely hilarious when I look back on it.

Funny that you would mention that, I once had a copy of Daggerfall, but was too young to comprehend it, years later I played Morrowind and enjoyed it thoroughly. Years more and I had oblivion which blew me away. I recently downloaded Daggerfall (it's freeware now for those who are interested, along with ES:Arena).

Even with years of gaming under my belt of all different pedigrees, daggerfall is just so staggeringly vast its actually off putting. I know in actuality the game is actually much smaller then it would first appear (what with the instant travel system... lol, and they whine at oblivion for that).

When you leave the first dungeon and enter the world and check your map, your brain implodes. It's got so many towns and other places to go to... then you realise YOUR ONLY IN ONE OF MANY LANDS LIKE THIS D: I got as far the town of daggerfall, did a few side quests, joined a guild did some jobs, bought some fancy armor, went on a dungeon crawl, then went to the castle... they wouldn't give me the quest as she "feared (she) is sending me to my death". I said, NO! I want to play the story, let me play the story dammit. I can't see myself committing as much time to that game as it seems to want from me. But I would love to keep trying, it's like watching the history of elder scrolls unfold in more ways then just the plot.

I played Oblivion in the middle of last year for about 10 hours before getting bored and uninstalling it. I bought Morrowind during the recent Steam holiday sale and currently have 53 hours on it and I'm nowhere near done.

For the record, I'm playing without mods.

Never played morrowind but I do think Oblivion is a great game, one of my all time favourites. I suppose a better comparison for me is the Bioware RPGs. I loved Neverwinter Nights & its add ons but never got on with any of the others, they always felt sluggish in comparison and the camera never felt right. I reinstalled NWN about a year ago and it was still great. I'd played through the story several times though so I didn't play through the whole thing but was still more enjoyable to me than their modern offerings or Baldurs gate.

When I went back and played morrowind, I had a blast.
Of course, I'm an explorer-type, so I just started wandering around the continent, looking for treasure under doormats or in peoples' broom closets. You just dont get that with Oblivion.
