Poll: Morrowind

I've been contemplating buying the GOTY version of Morrowind off of Steam ($20 at time of writing) to help tide me over until Skyrim. I've previously played it on the Xbox, which absolutely sucked (especially the combat) but I've somehow gotten it in my head that the PC version will be better.

Additional information:
I have Oblivion on PC and am currently replaying that in all its modded glory.
I'm going off to Uni in ~2.5 weeks.

The question here, in case you haven't already guessed it, is should I buy this game? And as a follow-up: if yes, should I wait for a sale?

The thing about Morrowind is that the gameplay is woefully outdated. Everything else is absolutely amazing. The game is unquestionably worth it, it's just harder to play now that most of its gameplay elements have been highly refined. Your quest list is cumbersome, there's no indication of anything on the map, the hit system is frustrating... it's all pretty good, but really old. But the story, atmosphere, and world are fantastic. I say go for it, and just push through the first bit of gameplay until fighting is actually possible, then it gets a lot better.

EDIT: Also, I've heard there are mods that make the battle system better and the graphics more highly-detailed. I played it on the Xbox, so I don't know, but you may want to check them out.

The combat in Morrowind is the most criticized area of the game, so it might not be better on PC.

That being said though, I loved that game to death when I played it on PC.

But I also think that $20 is a bit much for such an old game, so I say wait for a sale.

I don't know...I have played it for about 6 hours so far, and I really haven't gotten into it. I hear a lot of people say "it gets a lot better later", but I am still unconvinced. Your call.

Actually I think there is a mod that converts oblivion to morrowind(storyline and areawise) if im not mistaken that way you can play morrowind with oblivions graphics and game engine.

I looked it up, and it seems interesting. Still requires owning Morrowind. Probably has to do with using Morrowind files in the mod.

Yes. Get it now. Theres a good chance the next sale wont be till October or so, right before skyrim comes out, and youd only be saving 3 or 4 bucks probably.

Morrowind was a lot better to play vanilla then Oblivion was.

I played Morrowind vanilla for a year before I discovered mods, and even still I only run like 5 or 6.

Oblivion when I first played it I had to load at least 50 mods into the game inorder to make it playable, and even then it was still repetative and boring after a while.

fuck Morrowind's marksman combat...

The only main difference between Morrowind's marksman combat and Oblivion's was that Oblivion's allowed you to hit every time, wheras Morrowind didn't. This I liked a lot better then Oblivion's since it made sense. An FNG woodsman is not going to be 100% accurate with his bow and even if he hits it's likely to bounce off the enemy then to pierce through it. Conversely the bow and arrow/crossbow was pretty OP in Morrowind.

Get it now if possible. Especially since PC version has the console. Not for cheating (though going to the dev areas can be amusing) but to bump ahead any glitched quests. Also be sure to explore, the game is dull if you only do quests.

You should, Morrowind is awesome. I was going to play it again recently but instead I am going to wait for Skyrim.

It's still my favorite game ever. If it becomes yours as well, $20 is a small price to pay.

If you hate it though, $20 is a lot to gamble. Just remember going in that Morrowind is a RPG first and a FPS second. If you don't have the skills or your character is too tired to perform, you're going to have a bad time. I don't know how many stories I've heard of people stealing from an old lady in the first five minutes while armed with an unskilled dagger, and then having said old lady beat them to death with her bare hands.

I'd say no, but then it is the worst RPG out there in my experience. Oh, sure, I'm sure it was fine for its time, but these days there's far better stuff out there (and far cheaper than 20 quid as well). If you do want to play an old-school RPG for the PC though, I'm always willing to recommend Gothic I & II. They're the same medevil stuff as Morrowind, but so much better.

I will say this, be patient when playing the game, until you hit lvl 5 or 6 the game is terrible, but once you ge to that it is one of the best, immersive, detailed, and well thought out game worlds of all time

Get it. Get it NOW. And remember, whatever class you play, you will need, NEED, to have mysticism as a skill just for the teleportation.

Personally I'm saving another play through of Morrowind (with a few graphics mods) for after Skyrim hits. If Skyrim is a huge disappointment, at least I'll have that.

Do it. Yes, combat is poor in a way. It's similar to KOTOR's, lots of background stat/chance checks and such. Only difference is Morrowind doesn't have a dodge or block animation for each failed strike, so it can be a little frustrating to swing at an enemy and nothing happens. However, get past that and it's a rich unique world which is a joy to explore thanks to the abundance of things to find. What's more, I do love the complexity, such as the division of light/medium/heavy armour, or unarmoured. I've been playing through again recently, already put about 50 hours into it.

One piece of advice. Roll a fighter, get a high agility and pick your starting weapon as a major skill. Long sword will work well. Then you won't be so frustrated with the system until you're used to it. If you like bows, make marksman a major skill as well.

Has anyone tried playing through this? I'm interested as well, might be worth installing Oblivion and Morrowind again, and something to tide me over until Skyrim.
