I've got a friend who believe percussive maintainence is the solution to everything. He just got a pHd in which he will be studying and working with nuclear reactors. I'm seeing the accidental nuclear apocalypse being really likely right now.

My good old faith in humanity has me thinking that a global killer virus is far more likely to bring about our species destruction. And I wouldn't be surprised if it was man made.

Second to that, nuclear fall out. Either by missile or attempts to create fusion power plants.

Least likely is alien invasion as is death by asteroid or similarly catastrophic extra-terrestrial event.

Climate change completely wrecking current methods of agriculture, along with a massive hike in fuel prices to about three or four times what they are now. Shipping food and other goods would become really expensive and the global economy would just grind to a halt, and we'd see a lot of civil disorder over the whole affair, probably culminating in humanity fading slowly away.

My favourite apocalypse would probably be an 'Outside Context Problem', which is basically where a civilization or piece of technology far more advanced than ours comes into contact, and totally changes how we view the universe, or slaughters us all.

It's like the Comedian says:

"Mankind has been trying to kill each other off since the beginning of time. Now, we finally have the power to finish the job. Nothing's gonna matter once those nukes start flying, we'll all be dust."

If I had to take a guess, I'd say nuclear war.

End of the world, or end of our world? Cause a nuclear war, say, isn't going to wipe out our species, just our civilisation and maybe most of us.

Give it a hundred years, w'll have new things to be afraid of.

I'd say major climate change. Oddly enough we may put parts of Europe into an ice age due to the disruption of the gulf stream. Haha, global warming equals ice age, how horrifically funny.

Though, the most interesting would be nuclear. Mostly like it will be some sort of super virus due to our over reliance on antibiotics

I'm pretty sure one of the big positive points behind fusion power is that you don't get fallout if it all goes bang.

Sol going supernova.
I don't think it has the mass to do that, it'll swell up into a red giant, in which it'll eat the earth, and then turn into a white dwarf or something.

Well, that sounded ill-informed.

Yeah fusion doesn't make radiation there would be no Fallout. A big boom maybe but no fallout.

Hence "attempt" to create. If we're successful then great, for all I know simply trying to get one going might damn us all...

If you where using nuclear bombs to make it. But the raw elements are just not there, Ok well they are but you would need to be successful 10 fold before it means anything.

Assuming we're talking end of humanity here, I'd think viral, and I have no grounds in which to say that. Bigpox, maybe.

No "other"? since I think the most likely candidate is global warming/ new ice age.

Well I guess I vote for Zombie outbreak for the time being given how there had been a few zombies related news in the past few weeks.

I heard they are using 170 odd huge lasers to start the process now, supposedly the most powerful ever made... Colour me unconvinced haha.

You really have no idea how fusion works do you? Think of it this way you are not going to bake a cake when what you meant to do was make an omelet. You might end up with scrambled eggs but you are not going to get a cake.
