For me I need iron to make rail tracks, as i have completed a 500-700m long bridge but i need the rails to run across it and its allot of iron when you also have boosters on the bridge.

Iron, you need iron to find diamond, and unless you love mining you will normally be using iron as your main tool material.

I need sand to make glass, and glass to make self contained spherical biomes 120 blocks wide. I also need dirt to cover the ground in these spheroids, each one will need about 10,000 dirt...I think, I don't remember the formula for calculating the surface area of a spherical plain.

Wood, since most of my houses are made of it. It's much prettier than stone, atleast that's what Ithink.

Wool, I'm making a giant pyramid with the bottom at bedrock level. Even just making the outline down there I'm running into a lot of lava, so I use wool to fill in the lava and destroy it. Because it's renewable I don't feel bad when it gets destroyed.

Sand to make glass for my transcontinental sky bridge, and corresponding glass tunnels through the nether.

I also use it for the roof and stairs of my strip mining. Then I also need it and sulfur for TNT.

JUST never enough sand...

I'm currently trying to stockpile snow for something, haven't decided whether to make a fortress or a temple yet. Which is a point, does snow regen at all or not? I'm assuming not, but I did wonder...

I never have enough iron either, since all my tools are made from the stuff. Got tons of redstone though...

Stone-can't get enough of the stuff when I'm building giant sky houses and sculptures. Luckily there is a shed load of it and I normally have an invent full within a few minutes.

I don't really need too much of any of the others except iron and netherrock. Once I have a few diamonds I'm set and gold is just worthless.

Zombies, plenty. Slimes, a number. Skeletons, a few. Creepers, too damned many. Spiders...

Iron, because it is quickly consumed by tools and minecart tracks.
Whereas I keep all of my diamonds safe, and I don't have much use for the half-stack of diamond blocks in my chest.

Iron is the most useful for making items, but the resource I use the most is Stone. I build everything with stone (almost). I just finished a HUGE fortress... well, the walls. Its around 100*120 blocks wide and around 5-10 blocks high with a 4 block wide catwalk around the fortress walls. This is the place i'm going to build all my future projects... for now.

Wouldn't mind having some more wool, since due to a bug in my world NOTHING spawns naturally (anymore) so it's just me, 3 Squid and 2 Spawners for Spiders and Skeletons respectively.

Means I have to get my wool the hard way: 9 bits of string for each piece. I can grow wheat so I don't need Porkchops and I can just get my arrows directly from the Skeletons.
