Couldn't make it any simpler than that. I usually play games for at least 2 hours a day but with the Wii-motes I stopped usually after 30 minutes because I just couldn't get stuck into it. Immersion is impossible when I'm shaking the controller constantly and pointing it directly on the little buttons and shit.

Wouldn't have bothered me at all if they just made it that the gamecube controller can access all the same options. I bet they're gonna do the same thing with the WiiU.

I have a Kinect and I found that, as a motion controller, it does great. The fact that the games suck is a different matter.

I still think motion controlls can give you an awesome experience, when they stop focusing on games about Sonic, Mario and other bullcrap.

Maybe make something like Myst was for the PC, with the ability to manipulate objects , I dunno. Come to think of it, I would've loved to play Myst on the Kinect.

im not a fan of motion controls, but I do have to say that they do have their roles and place. I just don't think they have developed it right just as of yet. Maybe in a few years they will work out a nice niche. But really they always need the ability for you to just sit and relax while playing a game.

I think Motion controls are.... a bit underdeveloped. They hold a lot of promise, but more effort needs to go into development. Given time, I think motion controls will be a major part of gaming. In 10 or so years.

New technology is always a bit finicky and useless. The first hand-writing recognition software was truly awful, but these days its a lot better. True, the Kinect and the Move don't offer much now, but maybe in 20 years we will be playing with "Minority Report" style gloves with buttons. Actually, who knows what will happen in 20 years? Maybe we'll even have controllers that sense the electrical stimulation in your brain to move the characters - in fact, they are working on such controllers right now...

So I don't know what will happen to Motion controls in the future. I will say that they hold promise, but that I dislike their current use right now. I am willing to change my mind in the future.

I've always been divided on motion controls.

On the one hand, some of the stuff the Wii put out is hella fun to just fuck around with when you need to blow off some steam. Call me nuts but when I need to work off some excess frustration I find that humiliating the loser AI in Wii Tennis serves me just as well, if not better, than even the most overblown killing spree on Saint's Row 2. Cause it had that extra level of involvement. Instead of just pressing buttons and watching things die, I can physically work off all the stress that's built up in me for whatever reason.

But on the other hand, you have the argument that motion controls, when shoehorned into 'hardcore games' (a term I hate with the white-hot intensity of a thousand supernovas) can break immersion. And I find this is true as well. When I'm playing, for example, Half-Life 2, or L.A Noire, or Prototype, or any of those other big, Triple A core titles, the necessity of having to waggle my arms around to make shit go down is an unappealing prospect.

Reaching some balance between these two is what's needed to really make motion controls take off. Nobody's going to accept motion control if it's only reserved for casual titles but they're going to outright reject it if it's carelessly forced into big-name releases.

We need a compromise. It's what I think Kinect is working towards, and it's what to some extent the Wii-U is going to help achieve (only not with specifically motion controls, but just putting in more than just standard control layouts and leaving it there) so I think that in the upcoming years and into the next proper console generation we'll hopefully see less people bitching about motion controls as they become used in more sensible ways to benefit 'hardcore gaming' as opposed to working against it.

They are great for people who want to use them, I just have a preference to more precise and easy to use options.

Probably the only worthwhile motion controller.

Motion and touch controls by themselves, like Kinect and the IPad, are awful. When implented with a controller they are nowhere near as bad, like the Wiimote or DS screen. Oh but I hate gyrocontrol with controller or not.

Motion controls can never replace the controller.
The controller can never replace motion controls.

Thus a balance between the two must be found.

It depends on the game and how the developer uses them.
Metroid Prime:Trilogy is a excellent example of well executed Motion controls.

About wii:

That's because you don't play the right games, those that hate motion controls ... never played Metroid Prime 3 ... which is the only game that uses motion to it's full extent. Then comes Zelda Skyward Sword.

In Super Mario Galaxy was fine ... never i had any problem with the controls, you guys just play some crap games or what ...

Show me someone who can move faster or more accurate with a motion control than they can with keyboard/mouse; and then we'll talk.

Its only claimed to be immersive by the people pushing it. I agree in that, at best, you're very aware of yourself still.

Here I go;

For: Motion controls introduce something magnificent to some games though; physical motion. God forbid gamers get a bit of exercise now and again (note, I work out seperately, so don't go all "I do have a healthy lifestyle", if you do, this point isn't aimed at you.) it might even go a ways to destroying a common stereotype.

Against: As Yahtzee said himself; the game has to register your movement then do whatever it is you want to do. In other words there's a bit of a forced timelag which I agree is probably one of the stronger flaws of kinect.

For: honestly, what would make you feel more like a badass? Punching some guy out cold or pressing the button that knocked the guy out cold? Thus; Immersion.

Against: I still don't get how they'll make walking around (for example like in Mass Effect) with Kinect... That still bugs me.

All in all, it's open for improvement but is a great idea.

Voice control in squad based things like Mass Effect, for another.
Except this shit doesn't require a Kinect. Endwar did it years ago and didn't fail completely with just using a headset and basic voice recognition software included in the game. Making me buy a 150 dollar piece of equipment to shout at my stupid squadmates just sounds like bullshit./rant

They may not be good now, but after many years developing with them, developers will know how to use it properly, then we will see some decent games.

Name anything that has been gimmick in the past, and i bet most of them "Gimmicks" are around today.
