I agree with Yahtzee's main point about motion controls, that they ruin immersion.

Moving your thumb 4 millimeters to press a button take much less thought, time, and effort than waving your arms around like a twat.

When i gam ei liek to sit down and relax, enjoy myself. Not prance about and exercise!

Standard controls are much easier if you have friends over. Saying that though, it is fun playing wii golf as a group (but moving all the furniture is just akward)

you just haven't played the right games
i honestly doubt that even half the people who posed in here have ever even PLAYED the wii
and even Yahtzee has wii games he liked
the wiimote is a diamond in the rough, its new, its not perfect like the xbox 360(oh wait)
its has hidden potential, which is more then i can say for controllers. there is a reason why everyone jumped on that horse ;)

Motion controls need to fuck off and die. They are a failed idea from the 80's.
I'm glad your comment was the first response because I was going to say the exact same thing. I prefer a standard controller every which way you try it. Even the sixaxis from PS3 needs to go away. I just want to sit down, hold the controller and move my fingers. Is that too much to ask?

Motion control? For party games and maybe for fun once in a while, but I wouldn't manage to play for hours with that. Gets annoying pretty fast.
Though I confess I haven't tested the PS one yet because I just don't feel like throwing out so much money for it.

But Nintendo's so good at it!

This needs quoting just to outspam the pro motion sadness. This picture needs to be posted on the face of anyone attempting to sell anyone a motion control system anywhere, for ever. With a stapler.
But I love the power glove, its so bad...

I think it would be better if motion controls were worked on intensively instead of just dicarded, think about it they could offer unparaleled immersion
I saw the vid of the guy playing Ghost Recon Online with the kinect, and to zoom in, he punches up in the air, and to shoot, opens his hand. How is that immersive at all, it's nothing like the on screen action, destroying all sense of immersion

I tried motion controls once. But I have recovered now thankfully.

Was around at a mates and had a go with the Wii, the controller was god awful both at motion and at normal control - because of its shape. Glad I took the time to lug my PS3 and a pair of Duleshocks with me.

Unless I'm standing on the fucking holodeck standard controllers will always, ALWAYS, beat motion controls.
"I remember when we just used controllers" Holodeck woudl be great exercise.
Still can't beat that rock boss though and I called her fat after all of that.

The words of "an idea ahead of it's time" come to mind and it still is ahead of it's time. Nintendo really wants this apparently and in all honestly it caused other companies to have new ideas, some not great, but NEW ideas.

they, when done correctly, create immense immersion
I'd have to disagree with this.

Motion control can only create immersion (assuming the motion control system works great) with games that, if viewed as real life events, can be done by the average person.

And even then it'd be up for debate. I've never felt as immersed playing Wii bowling as I was when only moving my fingers playing any other game.

This pretty much limits the potential of motion control to sports games and cheap arcade-like aiming systems that give people carpal-tunnel (the Wii version of Modern Warfare comes to mind).

Fighting games, shooters, and any game where combat involves something more flamboyant than what a fat guy could do in his living room would have to be watered down.

Motion controls might work for some sort of exercise system (going back to Wii sports), but for all other types of games, it's just a cheap gimmick.

OT: aside from that, who said the Wii wasn't a console? Maybe not a good console but that is beside the point. I've personally seen it as an oblong GameCube that can run Super Smash Brothers: Brawl with a useless side feature for other games I'd never play.
This! So much this!

The problem I have with motion control is that if I am having fun playing a game with it, it means that I could be having more fun actually doing the activity in real life (and I'd have a dramatically higher chance of getting laid). Dance Central? Not quite as awesome as real dancing (the only plus being that I can make a fool of myself in private rather than public). Sports games? Not quite as fun as actually playing the sport. FPS? Not as good as mouse/keyboard, and it's definitely not as cool as actually shooting a gun (not counting crazy non-existent guns).

To everyone bashing me for saying the Wii is not a console, I was just stating my opinion and didnt hope to offend anyone.

I was coming from the perspectave of console wars. When people argue a point over which console is better it is 360 or PS3. What I should of said is that the Wii is in its own league.

Motion controls are a massive waste of time at this point, I'm fine without them.

Metroid Prime with the Wii motion controls is a joy.

The problem isn't motion controls, it's developers who are clueless about what to do with them.

Motion Controls and Standard controls can both be good if they are done right, aka. If I don't feel that it hinders game play, then I'm fine with it.

I like to use standard controls myself.

Although I don't agree that the Wii shouldn't be considered a console. Does it play games? Does it have a controller? Then it is a console.

Motion controls are great, but the Wii put too much emphasis on the motion controls and not enough into the other aspects of the console, and this meant that 3rd party developers had a tough time transfering their games to the console.

The PS3 controller has a motion senser in it which allows for movement recognition, but it is hardly used, if ever. Off the top of my head i can't remember any games which used this tech effectively.

However, i'm not one for mutual exclusivity, and i don't think we should have to choose, after all, if you could buy a games console that also cooked you bacon at the same price, don't tell me you wouldn't buy that over the regular console.

To create motion controls that really add something to your experience, you have to study how players use the existing tech, then use motion controls as an enhancement of that rather than as the core aspect of the controls. This way you could add in more variety with play without having to clutter up the controller with loads of new buttons.

If you bought a Kinect, do me a favor... please jump off a bridge. You are perpetuating a useless fad and making Microsoft believe it was a good idea. Just stop it.
