Everyone knows that if we keep going down the same path generation after generation, companies are going to get picked off one by one until you've got ActiBlizzTendoSoft making Call of Zelda, Revenge of the Locust Lich King.
This is now part of my signature on my emails, with appropriate credit. Awesome.

OT: Pudding.

OK, this time for real, OT: Motion controls are a direction for the future of gaming. Possibly not the best direction, but the one that seems to have been embraced by the console developers. Personally, I have no idea if this will work out well or not. I'd like to think that it will evolve and grow as time goes by, eventually becoming more than a gimmick and being accepted as a form of control.

If you think about it, there aren't many more spots to put buttons on a controller that aren't awkward and games are constantly getting more advanced and complex, to the point where we need some further way to interface with them. I can't think of a good example at the moment, but there must be one. Think about the games you've played. Aren't there one or two that had awkwardly mapped controls? Motion control is one of, possibly the best, answer to those problems.

I love the Wii Remote and Nunchuk combo more than any game controller I've ever used. I just hope they don't kill the controller entirely, like Natal is trying to do.

Mostly, people don't want to go through the motions when they're trying to relax and play a game. I say it'll end up like in the .hack-verse, people using controllers and keyboards with interactive virtual helmets. That, at least, is more sensible in hitting people's desire to sit there, push buttons and get interactivity.

Even if motion controls were perfected, the fact remains that when I play games, I usually want to lie back on the sofa and not move anything but my fingers, because I'm lazy. You can't relax playing a Wii game, and as a result, I often end up not playing them.

Everything you said is true, except there is always the chance people won't be too accepting of motion control being dominant at first, and button/motion control will have to co-exist for a while until one eventually becomes dominant. My money is on Motion for the immersion factor when the infant becomes an adult. And if you were referring to the EyeToy with the "10 Year" thing, that was a normal webcam sold as a controller. Natal has more than the average cam to back itself up.
No doubt, I agree. I don't think this will phase out buttons, there are games that just won't ever benefit from motion control (side scrollers, other games). I feel maybe people believe I mean that we will just be using motion control and motion control only, but no, I mean buttons will still play a part in it all, but it will definitely gain a considerable foothold in the industry. I would think it weird to have all this tech, and in ten years time not advance it, like I believe I said above.

As for the ten year thing, I actually mean Z Cam [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZCam]. Technically the technology has been out since 2000, and Z Cam has been rattling about, but Microsoft approached them a few years ago, and bought out this year, which is how Natal came about I believe.

Oh yeah, Z cam. And even more money says that if Yahtzee saw this topic, he would make a visual metaphor involving Nintendo, my face, and some black lines.
