So which one do you prefer? If both, what purposes do either of them serve?

Let me just come out and say and first-person shooters belong on the mouse and keyboard. This isn't really disputable. To argue otherwise would be like saying that the Wiimote is the best controller to use for DDR. I'm sure there's someone out there who can do it really, really well. But it's not the best or most intuitive way to do it. There are things that console-style controllers absolutely excel at (can you imagine playing Heavy Rain or Majora's Mask on a mouse and keyboard?), and FPS isn't one of them.

My rule of thumb is as such: More more responsive you need the controls to be, the more you should be leaning towards the mouse and keyboard setup. I'll give you a real-world example of this: FIRST Robotics. In this competition, teams construct robots that they then use to compete in various activities, often similar to sports.. The most popular setup for controlling these robots are the use of multiple joysticks. The second, increasingly popular set of controls is the XBox 360 controller. Why do these controllers work well? Because you're not using your robot to execute finely coordinated activities. You can't rely on these robots to move in finely-tuned millimeter increments. You want them to move in a general direction and perform specific actions with the touch of a button.

In contrast, let's look at RTS and FPS. In either of them, you want to be able to align your mouse right on the pixel. You ain't gettin' there with dual analogs. You've been using your mouse for years to click on tiny buttons on your screen. It works real well because you're not translating motion from your thumb, but your entire arm, which is much more stable. Furthermore, you're not pushing a stick on a pivot where speed is determined by how far you are from the rest position, like the pedal on your car. You're moving your mouse about like it's an actual object on your screen that you're taking and swinging.

That's my theory, anyways. I don't really know much about ergonomics and human kinesthetics, so these are just my observations from playing on many different controllers.

It really depends on the game, FPS and RTS keyboard and mouse is always the better choice
Everything else I prefer the controler

I prefer touch screens.
Touch screens are interesting, because they allow for even more minute and intuitive controls than the mouse.

Take for example, Elite Beat Agents. I've played that on an emulator before. It was a pain in the ass, and there was no chance I was getting an A. On the DS, though, it's a piece of cake.

The downside is that a) You either have a bigass hand or a stylus covering the screen, and b) Your range of motion is very, very limited.

And if you're on the Droid or the iPod Touch, enjoy smudging the shit out of your screen as you drag your finger across it.

So yeah, very specialized control scheme.

Mouse and keyboard, because first person shooters are one of the only times I feel controllers restrict me, and the mouse allows me to kill they ass with impunity. It's much more satisfying.

Sorry, but versus threads are frowned upon on these forums for a good reason. Anyways, I enjoy using a Keyboard and Mouse for most games except platformers. It's a ***** trying to platform without having the mobility of an analog stick.

Prefer Mouse and keyboard for accuracy and for games such as point and click adventure + RTS. Can use a controller though, and they are usually easier to get the hang of because they are pretty much the same controlls for the type of game.

Always a controller. Only exception is RTS games. I still think there are some playable ones with a controller, CnC3: Kane's Wrath was fun enough for me on the 360, but for older RTS games that my laptop can run I'll prefer it there.

But yeah I've grown up with controllers so it's what I'm accustomed to. FPS, RPG, Platformer... everything else comes much more natural to me with a controller.

Putting aside that I'm dynamic enough to use either a PC or controller setup, I still prefer control. This is something meant for games, whereas games on PC are "You have to figure out your own hand placement/coordination to use this game" with a mouse and keyboard. That's not hate on PC. That's just what it takes. You may have to dance your hands all over this keyboard without looking, maybe one-handed. Might not be that easy, and god help you if you do something that minimizes/stops the game, or just make a 'typo'. Any person who is a PC-user and complains about the use of controllers should be aware that the reverse is also true. But I like the way controllers are at this time. All you have to do is let your fingers do the talking and eventually you get so good that you don't even have to think about it.

And that reason is that they're divisive.

But I'm not being divisive. Not if you take the time to read anything I've written beyond the thread title.

I prefer keyboard and mouse for FPS and RTS. I like controllers for everything else. I need the mouse to aim and make precise boxes but I like the feel of the controller and placement of the buttons for most other things. (Of course the Power Glove beats everything... its so bad).

I prefer a controller for racing games, shooters and the like, simply because I grew up on them.

For RTS though, the mouse is essential, as is the keyboard for most RPGs.

For amusement sake, I generally prefer mouse and keyboard for pretty much most of my gaming, save for action games. I cannot see myself playing Devil May Cry or Bayonetta with a kbm setup.
